Is it usual for cats to be walking oddly after being spayed?

Our two rescue cats have been with us for 2 days now and are becoming braver. One has let me stroke her a few times, while the other is more timid but has come and sniffed my hand from under the bed, and doesn't scarper quite as fast as soon as she sees me!

The braver one seems to be walking a bit stiffly with her hind legs (not so sure about the other as she has been hiding more). They were spayed 10 days ago. Is it to be expected that they are still a bit tender, and not walking normally?

No it's not normal at all. It generally makes no difference to them whatsoever.

Oh, that's worrying. I need to take them to get stitches out so will ask the vet about it.

No, not normal. Get her into the vets ASAP, personally I'd be getting her to the vet now, before they close. Failing that, Pets At Home vets are open on Sundays. Cats go downhill very fast, and mask pain extremely well. If she's appearing stiff, you can guarantee she's in pain.

When are stitches to be taken out?

Stitches are due to be taken out on Monday. She has been running about the house, climbing on to window sills and eating well after the first day here of not eating much. It's just that there is a bit of a John Wayne style to her back legs when walking. Should I be very concerned still?

Pets At Home (pet superstore type thing) have an in-house vet clinic, and are open Sundays. I use them, and I must say I've been very impressed. Just do a google search for one in your locale.

If they have only been with you two days the May have some stiffness related to having a whole house to exercise in rather than just a cat pen. If she is eating, drinking, seeing and pooing it should be fine to wait till tomorrow.

Thank you, I spoke to an out of hours vet last night who reassured me that it would be fine to wait til Monday, and just to keep an eye on her for now. There is no sign of infection at the wound site, so that's a good thing. Yes, the cats didn't have much space at all the rescue centre, poor things, so maybe it's related to that.
