Please don't flame me...

I have a cat who is a hunter. He kills at least two animals daily. We've tried keeping him in but he breaks down the cat flap or escapes from open doors or windows at any opportunity.

This morning I awoke to two dead half eaten mice in the dining room and a dying magpie on the lawn. I had to put it out of its misery.

I have two toddlers, he scratches them and they tread in whatever entrails he's left overnight if I don't get downstairs and clean up first.

I've called 10 rescue centres today. The last one told me to have him PTS and deal with my own conscience as a murderer. Nice.

I'm in tears. I don't want to PTS, but what do I do? Lock him in a cage 24/7, make his life a misery?

I'm sitting here and I can't let my children out in the garden as there are 10+ magpies dive bombing the garden.

Help? He wears three bells on his collar and I try to keep him locked up from dusk til dawn Hmm

Regarding the magpies, they take it (a cat/person attacking one of their own) very personally and will remember and are quite vengeful. Hence them diving at you.

I have also discovered that magpies can get quite pissed off with a cat that kills a pigeon too. Lots of 'ack, ack, ack' occurs when my cat goes out now.

OP does sound like he's a cat for a farm/stables. Any near you?

sparkysparkysparky · 22/06/2015 16:39

I would drive many many many miles for a mouser if we had an infestation of mice.
Which is no good to you but I hope you can find a farm. Your bruiser would be in kitty heaven.
PS don't worry about the magpies; they predate the young of other birds all the time. Expect diverted flaming for that.

Pipbin · 22/06/2015 21:43

Could you keep the cat in at night?

windchimes23 · 22/06/2015 21:49

We have tried but he just smashes the cat flap or jumps out of an open window it it's hot.

I've even tried putting the bin and a chair against the cat flap but he still gets out and the noise wakes the children up.

If there is a a way to post pictures let me know and I can show you the damage he's done!

Flipping heck!!

Is he actually a lynx? Grin

AMcoffeeLover · 22/06/2015 22:04

Id take him if I could! The mice are literally driving my mad. But I don't think I'm crazy enough to drive 5/6 hours for a mouser. Give it a week and I might be! What's his name? Does he eat the mice or are you left with the remains?

AMcoffeeLover · 22/06/2015 22:06

Maybe I can post you mice for him to kill! I'll pay you......
4 were in my bath tub.

He leaves the tails, he's not that polite. Unfortunately!

Just to update this, I put the cat on a rehoming website and got a couple of very odd replies, including one about a plastic lady doll (you get the gist).

Anyway, I went into work and told the people in my team about it. Showed them the weird email.

The chap who sits across from me said I'll take him. I was in no mood for jokes at this point Wink But he genuinely said he wanted the cat. So I dropped him off on Saturday and my colleague is chuffed with his new cat. Apparently dead creatures are an offering of friendship and the cat is sleeping at the foot of his bed. All is well and the cat is very happy in his new, less stressful home Grin

Thanks for the update. Glad he is happy.

Awww good news :)

Lovethesea · 31/07/2015 10:22

Great news! I've an avid self feeder and hunter rescue cat (and a second that only catches moths) but mine has always been utter calmness with the kids when they were little.

Today I am trying to catch a mouse he has let loose in the house after clearing up yet more entrails in the hallway upon waking (rat I think). Mouse has disappeared despite attempts to catch it in a cereal box so now I have a mystery mouse in the house somewhere....

Huntercat is sleeping on my foot though, a big fluffy cuddly, killing machine that snoozes on my bed and loves being stroked and held in your arms like a baby.

googoodolly · 31/07/2015 14:53

Aww I'm glad this thread has a happy ending :)

Is it ginger Tom thing? Shock I have a wee ginger boy in my downstairs toilet settling in, now I'm worried!

Lovethesea · 31/07/2015 18:25

Mine is tabby, and fluffy, and had a fight with a car two years ago and smashed his leg and shouldn't be able to catch rabbits but does ...... but I thought all ginger toms were rogues by law?

windchimes23 · 31/07/2015 20:22

Ginger Toms are the Tigers of the domestic cat world. I was warned by a cat lover on the day he was dropped off at my house.

The little birds have returned to my garden, which is lovely.

I'll be replacing the upvc cat flap panel with my glass panel tomorrow. My house cat is happy to sit on the windowsill and watch.

Carnage is over Grin

MimsyBorogroves · 31/07/2015 20:52

My ginger tom won't touch birds, but loves mice. Sadly he wants to bring them home at 3am and screeches outside the back door until I let him in, without my glasses on, then I have to play find the carcass...

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/07/2015 21:33

You mean find the carcass isn't fun for you too?.

Ours has stopped bringing things in so either he isn't hunting or he doesn't love us anymore.
