Her name is Coco...

She's been eating Iams dry food - is that any good?

I'm sorry I can't answer I'm just overtaken by coteness

sashh · 30/05/2015 13:01

cuteness, cuteness, see I told you...

I can't handle the cute, I'm off to feminism

bodenbiscuit · 30/05/2015 13:17

I know, she is very cute!

Is it good for a cat to have only dried food though?

OP posts:
FannyFernackapan · 30/05/2015 13:24

Yes it's fine. Just make sure she always has water available. I've had a cat for 16 years ( several different ones! ) and have always given dry as it's more convenient

bodenbiscuit · 30/05/2015 13:27

Thanks Fanny. Do you have any opinion about Iams?

Oh god, that photo's made me kitten broody! She's GORGEOUS! Is she a Birman? I love colourpoints, got one myself, but a Devon Rex.

About the food. I think Iams isn't that great, and can cause cystitis and crystal blockages in the urethra. Applaws dry is good, 80% meat. They do a kitten one. It's what I feed mine on. They also get 2 wet meals of Animonda carny and Cosma.

Best place to get all this stuff is on Zooplus

bodenbiscuit · 30/05/2015 14:15

Thank you RubbishMantra. She's a seal point Ragdoll.

I would say that iams is just fine! I have a 10 month old kitten and she is fed on Waitrose own food. She is glossy coated and perfectly well. My last cat was fed solely on Go Cat and never a days illness in all her 16 years! The water is the crucial thing.

I sometimes add a little bit of oil from a tin of tuna to the food and treat her from time to time with a little tiny tin of wet food , maybe once a month. The water is the important thing

bodenbiscuit · 30/05/2015 18:04

Ok thanks. I haven't had a cat for many years so the food is different now.

One other thing I wanted to ask is how much should she be eating? She doesn't seem to look for her food. I have to put her in front of it and then she eats quickly and it's obvious she's hungry. The breeder told me that the other kittens in her litter were more pushy than she is and got the food first. I am not sure how much she should be having a day?

OP posts:
FannyFernackapan · 31/05/2015 07:07

A few small meals a day gradually leading to just one bowl a day every morning with fresh water. In your case I'd put down a little in the morning , at lunch time and in the evening.

tacal · 31/05/2015 12:15

If you tried her on wet food maybe she would go looking for it. My cat will eat dry but does not love it in the way she loves her wet food. She ignores dry food when it is out. It does not tempt her in the same way as wet food does.

bodenbiscuit · 31/05/2015 12:25

Thank you tacal. She's also a bit hit and miss with the litter tray atm. She will wee in there but often gets distracted and starts to poo somewhere she shouldn't. I've just been watching out for her to squat and moving her quickly to the litter tray. Also when she got here her poos looked very dry and hard and that seems to have improved now.

I will try getting her some wet food to have a little of as well. I haven't had a cat since I was living at home with my parents and it's funny how I forgot many of their ways!

noddyholder · 31/05/2015 12:28

Ours was weaned on canin and I bought it but he won't eat it here! I have an adult cat (old) and he eats her normal stuff SO far he is ok but I think too young. He also dragged a pain au raisin around the floor and I think he ate some too he is very naughty. I have now got whiskas kitten sachets and he likes those How old is she?

bodenbiscuit · 31/05/2015 12:31

Awww, lovely - noddyholder. It's strange but I was quite anxious at first when we brought ours home. We have guinea pigs already and they are really fragile compared to a cat if they happen to eat the wrong thing etc. So I had forgotten that cats are a lot more independent. The children adore her. She has hardly meowed at all though!

She's only 9 weeks.

noddyholder · 31/05/2015 12:37

Same as mine he is 9 weeks too A bit young I think! he miaows a lot and is very friendly follows me everywhere think I have made a rod for my back already!

noddyholder · 31/05/2015 12:39

I've done a bit of research recently into kitten food.

You need one with high meat/low fillers.

Applaws dry food was about the best quality wise. Wet food I went for thrive and natures menu.

Supermarket cat food is usually about 4% meat I think..

bodenbiscuit · 01/06/2015 17:07

Thank you Mica - I have tried giving her nature's menu. The problem is though that she now won't eat the dry food! Although she looked really happy afterwards.

Sooo cute! And Noddy's is adorable too.
I feed our 6 month old Maine Coon a mixture of wet and dry Lily's Kitchen.
