Kitten that doesn't want to go out ... but needs to go out

I have two 6 month old kittens.

One has always seemed more boisterous and bolder than his more wary timid brother.

They have been able to go outside for a few weeks now, the more timid one flew out the back door on that first day and surprised us all by spending most of the day exploring the garden. He returned for dinner and collapsed exhausted on the sofa.

His bolder brother refuses to leave the back door step. If he is tempted out, he runs back in if a bird dares to fly overhead. I wouldn't mind him not going out if he was a bit calmer and less destructive indoors.

We play with him using the fishing rod but come 2am he is running wild or destroying something if shut in the living room or kitchen. I think he needs to go out, burn some energy and he does seem like a natural hunter (when playing with the fishing rod, he doesn't dart around like his daft brother, he sits, waits and pounces when he is sure of the catch).

Will he ever go out? Is there anything I can do?

Have they both been neutered and had all their shots, Playing ?

He may just be taking it more slowly and need a little more time. I'd give him that time to make up his mind - forcing him out might be more damaging to him in the long term.

Have you tried going outside and pottering around/reading etc in the garden with a door open so that he can dive back inside? He may be very human oriented and feel more comfortable about outside if he sees you all out there being calm and happy. Smile

PS - are you thinking about a cat flap for them?

They have been neutered, micro chipped, have had all their jabs and been treated with advocate and milbemax.

They are good to go - except one doesn't want to go Grin

I've been out the back this weekend playing with the dc and he has no interest in following us. He sits and watches but doesn't come out.

How old are the DC? Maybe he sees outside as busy and noisy and inside as a 'haven of peace and tranquility'! Grin

It sounds as if he may be a cautious type so I'd just let him get on with his own thing at his own speed.

They are 7, 4 and 1 so that could well be the case Grin
