Cat shits on floor. Not every time, just sometimes :/

A few weeks ago the cat (18 months old, male, neutered) had a bit of a dicky tummy and a couple of times didnt make it to the box in time. Not great but I thought when he was better all would be ok. Not so. Several times, he's shat on the kitchen floor, in some cases not even squatting - he's just stood there and curled one out. His box I'd kept clean - I scoop after every pooh, do a thorough litter change once a week and a proper clean once a fortnight. It's a covered box and he happily pees in there, and usually poohs as well except for the odd time when it's as if he just can't be arsed.

This morning DH found a perfectly formed shit in the middle of the kitchen and proceeded to act like an idiot, frankly. He banished the cat to the garden, refused to feed him (and when I tried to, he kept shutting the door so cat couldn't get in - we have glass doors so no flap). He reckons this will make the cat think about what he's done and behave better in future Confused having apparently failed to notice that the cat is not a child and cannot conceptualise what DH seems to intend him to.

It's lovely that DH seems to credit the cat with much more intelligence than he actually has but seriously, I don't know why cat is poohing on the floor now and again and I don't know how to stop it. He seems happy - he's affectionate, curious, eats well, doesn't seem stressed or ill or in pain. Maybe the smell has seeped into the litter box and it's time for a new one? I've scrubbed the floor with odour remover but it doesn't seem to have much effect. I really need to break this habit as I can't deal with wondering every morning if there'll be a little present awaiting me. Also can't deal with DH's weird ideas about the intelligence of cats! Any advice???

No advice, just sympathy. I have one like this - she had a crap the other day when I was stroking her. And the other one has just done the world's biggest piss on the sitting room carpet - never done before, no idea why.

Your DH sounds like a twat. Locking a cat out and not feeding it is just cruel. I'd have killed my DH for doing that to any of mine.

Tips - clean the litter tray out thoroughly with washing powder and water. Also use that to clean the places he's shit. If this doesn't work, a trip to the vets is in order. Toiletting issues can be a cats way of indicating something is wrong.

I think I'll have to take him to get checked out (the cat, not DH) just to be sure. It's the unpredictability that gets me! Cat is dozing next to me and has been clean today - he's such a sweetie really and I just want him to be happy.

Agree with Stinkers, that is just cruel and nasty Sad

Your cat won't process that being shut out is to do with his toiletting, it will likely only stress him and lead to more inappropriate pooing. I would first to to the vet, it's unusual that he's passing stools without squatting and it maybe that the bowel hasn't recovered from the upset he had. Are you up to date with worming?
