Any advice on looking for kittens please?

We'd like to get two kittens or very young cats.

I can see that the local cat rehoming charities don't have any but there's plenty on gumtree. What should I be looking for and wary of?

thanks fluffy, it is exciting!

would it be better to get a younger cat as second cat? So that he can assert his dominance or something?

We got our two from Celia Hammond at about 9/10 months old. They have not a single bad habit ( but had never lived in a house before, so maybe no opportunity!). I was amazed at how quickly they settled in and now, less than 2 months later, are very affectionate( lap sitting, bed sleeping cuddlers).
We close the cat flap at night so we know they are safe, after insisting they come in at about 7pm.
Good luck with your new family, ocho. I feel excited for you too!

OP - Excellent news about your new cat, so exciting!
Just to add if people do want cats/kittens please use a rescue centre. Our latest cat was from a local one, she was approximately 12 weeks when we got her. She had been found in a box with her sisters which had been closed with duct tape so they couldn't get out. The vet said they were between 6 - 12 hours away from dying. Breaks my heart when I can see her now lying on the back of the sofa in the sunshine randomly talking to me!

Ask the shelter if he gets on with other cats. He might not be a dominant cat anyway.

The boy cat hasn't lived with other cats since he left the litter, so he's untested.

I can't decide what to do!

  1. just get boy cat
  2. get boy cat now then grey mum in a few weeks
  3. get boy cat now then a kitten in a few weeks??

It's lovely to hear that you are adopting from a rescue.

I wouldn't get a kitten full stop - not with young children - it really isn't worth the risk.

I'm surprised they're not planning to home the nursing mum with one of her kittens. That's what we do.

However if that is what the rescue have decided to do then there is no reason you shouldn't get her as well. I'm sure they'll both get on eventually.

thanks TCN, I value your opinion Flowers

Ah, that's great news. I have a black and white boy and he's great.
