I have some Profender spot on wormer, that'd ended up at the back of the cupboard.
Thing is that its out of date (12 months). It seems silly to waste it if it'll still be ok.
Would you still use it?

(Does anyone know if it'd be dangerous, ineffective, neither,or both?)

Probably ineffective by now.

There are many factors that affect the shelf life of meds eg heat, light, chemical instability etc so while I might have the occasional suspicion that any useability advice could possibly - in some instances and not all - represent liability cover on the part of the manufacturer, I think I'd always honour the expiry date on meds.

After all, they go into your cat's body and affect it physically. It might be a bit of a PITA to find overlooked expensive potions but I wouldn't risk using them.

RubbishMantra · 26/04/2015 11:04

I wouldn't take the risk. As well as being ineffective, they can become dangerous.

cozietoesie · 26/04/2015 11:24

I think you would also have to ask yourself just why they had become 'ineffective' - and that would surely be because the active ingredients had changed in some way. So changed in what way?

I wouldn't take the risk. My cats don't have any choice in getting their meds so the least I can do is ensure that what goes on or in them is up to scratch. I'd probably swear a bit for overlooking something so costly that long (although it's surprisingly easy to do with spot-ons where you can often shove part-used packets in a drawer somewhere) but that's my problem and not the cat's.

(It could join the long list of things I swear/mutter at myself about every week anyway!)

Thanks everyone!
I think I'll not take the risk.
I just didn't know if I was being ott,but my instinct was to bin it,so I shall.

Thank you, OP. This is actually a timely reminder to me to turn out some of my drawers and check what meds - and other things - might be hanging around unused. It will be a useful occupation for me this evening.
