Any recommendations for a good quality wet cat food for new rescue cats?

They're not arriving til next Tuesday but are currently on Felix pouches and gocat dried. Fosterer has said they've had a few issues with squitty poo on and off and I'm wondering if a better quality and/or cereal free food would help? Obviously I won't change it straight away and will adjust it gradually over a few days/weeks once they're settled. But am just planning ahead! They're both around the 9 month age and neutered females if that makes any difference. Thanks all!!

I use Grau grain free which seems to keep them in absolutely excellent condition. However after a year on it they're currently protesting for change so I've been trialling Cosma and James Wellbeloved (which does have some grain). The James makes the madcat slightly loose so suspect she needs a totally grain free, but it's nothing like the carnage we had on whiskas and they like the gravy element. They LOVE Cosma but it doesn't seem to make the coats as shiny and I don't think it's a complete food (could be wrong though) so you'd need to supplement with dry or something.

Animonda Carny is very similar to Grau in texture and odour and a lot of people use that too.

My cats have Tesco own wet food, tiger range, only the fish ones. They also have Purina cat biscuits. Both have healthy shiny fur and no issues with poo! I bulk buy the cat biscuits online through Amazon and get them delivered every three months.

Asda not Tesco. I have not shopped in Tesco for two years so no idea why I said that. Blame the painkillers which have addled my brain today.

Mine get Applaws dry. It's cereal free and extremely high meat content. Cosma wet, but you're right Shaska, Cosma's just a complimentary food.

They were on Animonda Carny until the last bulk order arrived. Then my fickle bastards cats decided they'd gone off it. So I have a load of it in the cellar, waiting to be donated to a cat shelter.

Not used Butchers Classic myself, but recommended on here a lot. Not pricey either. Keep meaning to try it on my 2 boys.

Applaws dry is fab, my kitten had the most awful stinky farts and poo but when I switched to Applaws the problem disappeared. They do a wet food, I think, but I haven't tried it.

*Oh, and forgot to say, Go-Cat's horrible stuff. MCat was fed on that before he came to live with me. He has a beautiful and glossy coat now, when it used to be dull and dandruffy.

Thanks all! Previous cats were always fed on hills science but I'm not sure about that now. I might try some butchers and applaws dry.

Applaws dry is good.

Mine is on Natures Menu and Thrive pouches/tins for wet. Good quality, high meat content. My kitten was very runny when he came to us- been weaned on felix. Once I got him on decent food he's fine, and actually very little upsets him now (touch wood) even when he finds a cheese sandwich :)

Avoid supermarket/felix/whiskers and similar brands. Often only 4% meat. I had to buy some in an emergency and it's pretty much Macdonalds for cats.

If they have irritable stomachs you can get prescription food which is designed for squitty cats. My IBD cat needed the prescription stuff.

Butchers Classic. It seems to clear the the squits remarkably well (it's cereal-free). It's also vet-recommended for mouth problems and is cheap.

For dried food then Applaws, Arden Grange or basically anything 'quality'.

I don't feed any dried at all though - just Butchers Classic all the time for all mine.

thecatneuterer · 22/04/2015 15:59

That's Butcher Classic tins just to be clear.

Thanks thecatneuterer! I'm liking the sound of Butchers!
