My cat's got a bulge on her tummy

A few weeks ago someone asked me if my cat was pregnant. She can't be as she was neutered by CP before we got her. I thought no more about the comment until today when I noticed she seems to have a bit hanging down towards the back of her tummy. It feels like a loose bag if that makes sense.

I'll phone the vet in the morning but does anyone have any idea what it might be as I'm worried? She's nearly 4 btw.

Sort of between her back legs??? Common place for a fat pad.. How is she otherwise?

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 20:01

It's a bit further forward than her back legs. She's very well otherwise.

Hernia?.

shaska · 21/04/2015 20:03

Empty feeling, down the back and saggy, not solid, lumpy or causing her any problems? Quite normal in my experience. Some cats seem more prone to it, I suppose just as some of us have flatter stomachs than others!

I think it CAN be a weight thing but as far as I know can also just be how they're shaped, so if she's not overweight on the scales I wouldn't worry. And I've never had any luck teaching a cat to do sit ups.

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 20:05

Yes that's it shaska. She's always been quite small. Is it worth letting the vet have a look?

It's likely to be her mammary fat pad - combination of droopy boobs and excess chub

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 20:06

Does she need a bra intervention? Grin

Does it look like this?

Is she due at the vet for a check up anytime soon? You could always combine the two issues if you're concerned. (It sounds normal-ish but if you're worried about her.......)

Dancergirl · 21/04/2015 20:12

Yes! Check up and jabs not due for a good few months, but I feel reassured.

I noticed a bulge on dearly departed Creature when she was a kitten. It was an umbilical hernia. They sorted it when she got spayed. Instead of going through the side as they usually would, they did a middle incision.

ooh, one of our moggies has that saggy tum look. He came to us very obese and he's not very active at best of times. Seems well enough otherwise. He's a very large (boned, honest!) frame cat so hard to know what he should weigh. Still greedy as all heck, too.

shaska · 21/04/2015 22:04

Prior cat had a giant one. She was only wee as well- just seemed to have loads spare around there. Current cats one tends toward it in the winter, other trim and tightly wound. You could try one of those slimming clay wraps perhaps?

Olinguito · 21/04/2015 23:58

My cat has one of those. It swings from side to side when she runs. She's not fat anywhere else, just has a saggy bit.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/04/2015 12:03

Harry has one of those and you can see it swinging when he runs! He's quite slim apart from that.

Update - found what looked like poo on carpet this morning Hmm

She NEVER poos in the house and I'm actually not sure but it could have been sick.

She's a very unsicky cat, happens maybe twice a year at most.....could be a complete coincidence of course. Do you think it's anything ominous?

OP posts:
shaska · 22/04/2015 15:02

Unlikely that you've still got it or had a close up look but could it have been a hairball? They look a lot like poo but are hair. Normally the lack of smell is the tell as they can look very similar if you don't get up close.

Id keep an eye. Changes in body shape and/or behaviour can be signs of something going on, but unless she keeps up with the pooing or seems unwell in other ways I'm inclined to think coincidence.

cozietoesie · 22/04/2015 15:10

Yes - I hate to be too indelicate but did you have a sniff or a prod? It could have been a serious furball.

CheshireCait · 22/04/2015 15:12

Our two have the saggy bit there; our bigger cat especially. We call it puggage.

My parents' cat had it too.

storytopper · 22/04/2015 15:22

Both our cats (female, neutered, aged nearly 8 years) have this. Think it is just like saggy boobs or moobs in a person.

Obviously keep an eye on the poo situation.

cozietoesie · 22/04/2015 15:27

It's known as a 'primordial pouch'. Wink
