Hi, my cat has dandruff. I noticed it today and was wondering what caused it. Did the vet say it should clear up soon?

Kerberos · 20/04/2015 18:32

Yes my black cat is all dandruffy too. She also has a skin allergy so she's usually a lumpy and bumpy anyway.

You could add some salmon oil to their diet. I've heard it's used by people feeding raw diets to dogs, so it could help with cats?

Our old cat has dandruff. He can't groom properly so I have to brush him. It's not great and an all year round thing! Doesn't bother him though.

Vet said it was seasonable and not to do anything. Interestingly he has got "feline ache" under his chin and again was told nothing bad as its not bothering him and inflammed and just to put a touch of vaseline under his chin and keep away from plastic bowls.

Ive read up and if dandruff is related to skin allergy etc.. their coat would be dull and rough to tough ours is the opposite, glossy and feels like silk so hoping it is just the summer malt

Thanks for this . I've noticed it on mine recently as well. I brush them everyday which I hope helps. glad I'm not alone in this.

Friends cat gets this. Are you rural? For her it's something to do with the fields.

Harvest mites can cause skin issues too.

It's moult, btw. Having visions of you trying to make beer from the cat!

I'd love a malty cat. I'd sniff it all day long!!

I agree that dandruff tends to be more indicative of a skin problem of some sort rather than just moulting.

tacal · 21/04/2015 11:16

If dandruff is caused by a skin condition what should I do? Should I take her to see the vet?

thecatneuterer · 21/04/2015 11:43

tacal - well it wouldn't hurt. Or maybe just mention it at the next routine check. I don't think it's an easy thing to sort out though.

shaska · 21/04/2015 11:46

I'm currently testing a dietary theory about dandruff, as I switched foods and the lamb started flaking - I've changed back and we'll see if that stops it.

tacal · 21/04/2015 17:45

thanks tcn I mentioned to vet at her first appointment that she had some bumps on her skin but vet didn't seem interested. The bumps/spots went away but now she has dandruff.

I have been thinking it could be to do with diet, I will keep an eye on her diet. She has been having chicken recently which is a new flavour for her.

My older cat (17) is dandruffy. but we are struggling to get her fed properly anymore, and I think it is more malnutrition than moulting. Sad

she has never had it before, but then, this is only the second winter in this climate and having a winter coat.
