Bengal cats?

Hello, hoping I can get some advice here! I've had cats as a child but have now moved in with my partner and we are going to get a cat/cats. We will get them from a rescue centre. We both work, though I have some time at home in school holidays. We own a house and have a garden, no children.

We originally thought about getting one domestic moggy, probably a kitten/juvenile, in the summer as I will be at home. I wanted to adopt a black cat as I think they are rehomed far less than other colours. But we've seen a pair of Bengal cats who are older, but adorable. They would need to be taken as a pair. I am rather in love with them but we know we need to think carefully about whether we are the best home for them.

Does anyone have any experience of Bengals as opposed to normal cats? What sort of financial commitment should we expect, and does our situation sound ok for them? Does having two cats mean a different relationship with the owner, or is it ideal because they'll have company when we're at work? Is it more complicated than having one?

Thanks in advance for all advice, happy to answer questions.

Oh I meant to say, they had a water fountain, but pulled it to bits.

A pouch a day each for indoor Bengals? I'm amazed you have any fingers left to type with. That's a typo surely?

Ah sorry - just remembered that they have dried as well. Phew.

I had a Bengal before kids and he was lovely. He did drive me nuts with the constant meowing and he was inconsistent at best with the litter tray. He loved other cats and getting in the shower with you! He was friendly with everyone and ran to greet people. Our current cats are abbysinnians and the breeder told us they shouldn't go out because of lack of road sense but ours are two and have been out since 6 months. They are much happier for it I think. We didn't get another Bengal largely because of the meowing. He was sooo loud!

I had an F3 (so her chilren would have been bengals as she was still considered a Asian leopard hybrid) and now an F5 bengal. Both were lovely in their own way. Compared to other cats I've had they like to talk, it takes a while to get what they are saying, but it's fun having a consersation. They are fascinated with water every glass left on the floor will be tipped over, we needed to get a new water bowl for present cat 'cause she likes to splash water around before drinking so we got one shecan do it with out tipping the bowl. Besides that they have amazing personalities, v distictive. The rest id really down to individuals. F5 is the tames cat I ever saw. Never scratches or bites even if I clean her ears or clip her claws and she clearly does not like it. It's the first cat I ever had that I can do it with out any assistance. At the vet she sheds like mad but lets him do him job with out complaining or fighting. One wasa fussy eater, the other not at all. Both worship tuna.

F3 like to pick up chitchats in the middle of the night. We ignored her two days in a row and she stopped.

Meet them you will know if you click or not.

And report back here! :)

Just to belatedly update this - we now are the happy owners of the two bengals! They are very adorable - one is very energetic and likes jumping around, playing with toys and running, the other is a total lapcat who just likes sitting with us, but both enjoy quiet time (and watching tv, weirdly)! One is rather underweight and had some tummy trouble but this is getting better now we're giving her different food. The other has respiratory problems and periodically does revolting sneezes but is on antibiotics and decongestants that will hopefully help her. Both have lovely personalities and seem very settled here. Thank you for all the advice!

Great news, Bengals are lovely cats. I'm sure they will pick up health wise now they have a stable home.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/05/2015 08:58

That's lovely, I'm glad you took them in.

timtam23 · 27/05/2015 09:35

How lovely. Do you have a photo of them?

My cat loves watching TV too. Especially programmes with birds or birdsong. We had to put a chair next to the TV for him a few days ago as he wanted to get up close with the birds!
