What if your cat catches a bee?

Ours has been chasing big bumble bees for the last few days and I think it's just a matter of time...
Has anyone had a cat (or dog even) with a sting in it's mouth?

Tell it to buzz off?

We've had wasps and bees but no stings. I would assume vet, if so.

One of my cats did a year or so ago. Not in her mouth, but she did get stung on her paw. Her paw went huge!! She came to me and did that 'mum I have an oweee' .

Cost me £60!! Unfortunately she is pretty much allergic to anything, so had some painkillers, anti inflammatory and I think steroids or anti histamine. Can't remember which. Vet did say not all cats react, but look out for rubbing paws on mouths, drooling etc.

Cat is also an indoor cat because of her allergies, but still manages to have a trip to the vet every 3 months or so!!

Mine just eats them.

Polyethyl · 09/04/2015 12:11

Yes. Major drama. Don't let your cat hunt bees/wasps. She caught the bee in her mouth. It stung the inside of her mouth. Cat screamed, bee flew out. Her head swelled up frighteningly quickly. Her airway started to be affected. Luckily we live very close to our vet so sprinted round. She was seeing to another client's dog, but hearing the commotion in the reception she came out and gave the cat an injection. The swelling went down remarkably quickly. I have never seen a human have an anafalactic shock jab - but I'm pretty certain that's what the vet gave my cat. If the vet had been closed I think we would have lost our cat.

My dog got stung on the nose and it was so swollen he was unrecognisable... I can't really stop him chasing them though.

BooChunky · 09/04/2015 12:12

Just realised this was about cats... Sorry Grin

juliascurr · 09/04/2015 12:16

our cat had Big Paw from a bee
didn't put her off; took a few days to go down

chockbic · 09/04/2015 12:17

Not much you can do to stop them hunting whatever takes their fancy.

Pyjama · 09/04/2015 18:09

hi, my dog was sniffing at a wasp and got stung on her muzzle. her face and nose swelled up and she was rushed to the vets for injections... it hasn't deterred her at all unfortunatelyAngry

AnneElliott · 09/04/2015 21:02

My kitten did ur last week. Her nose swelled up to 3 times its size!

tabulahrasa · 10/04/2015 12:55

Never the cats, but current dog and last dog have both been stung in the mouth...current dog just did a comedy that flying thing I caught hurt me face, last dog swelled up like a balloon and had to be rushed to the vet as he couldn't breath properly and his heart was doing weird things...git was fine by the time he was examined, lol.

So I figure it depends on whether they're allergic to them or not and you won't know unless it happens.

thecatneuterer · 10/04/2015 14:29

Cats do die if they get stung in the mouth as the airway swells and blocks. And it happens very quickly. I think Lone once said that unless it happens right outside a vets then it's probably curtains.

PeppermintCrayon · 10/04/2015 22:04

How are you meant to stop them?!

My cat brought me a half-dead bee the other day. Delightful... not.

thecatneuterer · 10/04/2015 23:03

Peppermint good question - I have no idea.

PeppermintCrayon · 11/04/2015 11:21

And today he caught a bee, carried it in through the cat flap, carried it upstairs and released it in our bedroom. Delightful.

ragged · 11/04/2015 11:27

I'm more worried about butterfly carnage tbh.

PeppermintCrayon · 11/04/2015 12:25

He's just done the same again!

SisterMoonshine · 11/04/2015 20:38

"How are you meant to stop them?"
I don't know. I'm sort of thinking the cat is going to learn the hard way (soon).
And hope it's not too serious.

The first time my girl kitten went outside she managed to get stung by a bee!! On her foot and it was still very traumatic, the whole foot swelled up and required an expensive trip to the vet.

Tbf she hasn't done it again...
