possible ear amputation

I have just found out that I white cat I was considering adopting may need the tips of her ears amputated due to scarring that may turn out to be cancerous. The rescue centre have said it will need monitoring and will obviously be my responsibility if it is needed.

Would you proceed in these circumstances? I have asked my vet for a hypothetical quotation and they have not got back to me yet. I am worried about costs as I assume this won't be covered by insurance, as well as the likelihood of further problems arising if there is already cancer and it spreads. Would feel awful to back out now, but not sure this is something I can take on, especially with dc to think about if there were further problems.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm not sure if this helps but the people we bought our old house from had a lovely tabby with white ears. He had both ear tips removed and then lived to a ripe old age.
How old is the cat?

Amputation of the ear tips is one of the cheapest procedures you can have generally - it's just like a big ear tip (all rescues cut off the tips of the left ears of feral cats to show which ones are neutered). It's a procedure that only takes a few minutes and no great skill.

If it's done early enough (and this sounds like pre-cancerous lesions) then generally that's it - cancer never develops. Obviously all cats with white ears will need their ears monitoring if they go outside and sunblock is a really good idea.

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't go ahead.
