Is this a good idea for kitten comfort or insanity?

We hope to get a kitten in the summer. My lovely old girl died recently but it's a long time since I've had a kitten.
Old Girl had a litter mate when I got her (Slightly Less Old Girl predeceased Old Girl) and so I can't answer this from my own experience.
Could I use a very wrapped up hot water bottle for New Kitty in a covered bed ?.The idea is to help her find somewhere warm and cosy to sleep. DD 8 plans to have New Kitty settle in her room - we'll probably put bed, litter, food and water (away from food) in a cage to start out. Is a hot water bottle the way of madness or can it help with settling in?
I've seen those purring machine things and I'm very dubious.

She'll most likely want to sleep in bed with your DD. Grin

I wouldn't really mind that (hope I won't be corrected on this thread) but I'm thinking about very early days when New Kitty may want to hide.

Not an insane idea, but I don't know if it is good one as I never tried it.
I know two people who have heated cat pads that are layed in a safe place. Let's say that if there are no humans around to interact with, this is their favorite spot by far. The kittens love it and let their mother have time for herself and the old cat loves it too. There exists all kind of pads from the basic to the really fancy ones. I think they all have the option of starting to heat up only when the cat is on it, but you would need to check for that.

I tried to find you a like to one but I'm not in the UK

I sometimes 'do' a hot water bottle for my mogs. They enjoy it :o

Can't harm. What about two kitties? Out of the question?

Thanks. I've seen a microwaveable heat pad at Pets at Home (renamed Largest Ever Pet Shop by my Littlest Pet Shop loving dd). That might be the sort of thing. And less likely to pop !

Two kitties out of the question, I'm afraid. DH is asthmatic. Old Girl had to live with my mum until Mum had an accident (better ish now) and I insisted we bring Old Girl home to us where she spent her final months asleep on our bed or playing like a kitten. DH needed the occasional anti h but did Ok. He has agreed on one kitten now but two would be too much.

Our kitten likes to sleep on my head.

He may not be normal though.

Qwebec · 23/03/2015 16:32

The ones I know of are plugged in the wall, I did not know they made the microwaveable ones. Ouuuuuh technology :)

chockbic · 23/03/2015 16:38

The microwave pads don't get very hot, in my experience. Or stay warm for long.

I'm assuming New Kitty will find her own spot once she has settled in - how do cats always find the warmest spot in the house? We give dd a hot water bottle in winter. I predict a confluence of warm spot hunting / dd bed invading.

New kitty will probably keep your DD awake all night playing and she will ask you to move her/him to another room.

sparkysparkysparky · 23/03/2015 17:38

Thanks puppy, another reason why we are doing this in school holidays. I also predict much craziness. One reason why I wanted a cosy warm spot for NewKitty is the outside possibility this might mean less night disturbance for dd. I have a plan b and plan c etc.

I think it's a lovely idea, you'll be a wonderful owner.

Thank you to all.
