Cat on Tramadol not eating or drinking, heavy snoring

LegoCat has apparently broken his hip :( according to the emergency vet he has to go back to our local vet tomorrow for X-rays etc

But. For now is on tramadol....he's not eating or drinking (I don't think I would either if I had an injury like that) and he's started heavy snoring...likes human!

Should we be worried?! Call the emergency vet again?! Wait until tomorrow?!

Should also say, emergency vet is a 45min drive away (possibly an hour + today) which he hates (am concerned about him doing more damage to his hip by moving around in distress) whereas local vet is (literally) a 90second walk away

Can you get hold of a dog cage to put him in, to restrict his movement 'til tomorrow? With all his things in there?

Did the emergency vet give you any advice re. care? Did they lend you a cage, or advise you to keep him in one?

Healing thoughts to your boy. You must be terribly worried.

Tramadol is an option drug and can have a sedating affect as well as pain relief. Keeping him confined is the right thing.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 15/03/2015 16:18

He's curled up in his bed not wanting to move anyway so not so worried about movement (we have a cat basket aswell if need be)

No real advise other then to give him tramadol 3x a day then go to vets tomorrow...am going to buy a syringe to get some water in him at least tonight...but he's refusing even his favourite treats....big worry for me is dehydration...how long can he go without drinking?!

Good idea getting some water into him. There's a gap between their back teeth that the nose of the syringe fits between. If you force the mouth open and squirt down the back of the throat, they can choke. Especially if sedated.

cozietoesie · 15/03/2015 16:57

Have you got anything like puppy training pads just in case his hip is troubling him so much that he can't pee properly in a tray?

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 15/03/2015 20:18

I've syringed some water into him...not a huge amount but I feel slightly better that he's had a little..picked him up to try and help him go for a wee and he cried...didn't wee either but he's barely drunk anything so I'm not suprised...poor sod is in his bed just laying there.

I'm petrified something will happen tonight so I'm staying up all night....but the vet wouldn't have said it's ok to go home if it wasn't would she??

This is a really horrid feeling...I'm on the verge of tears

Poor cat, sleep in the same room, if he needs you he'll let you know.

I'm sure the vet would hospitalise him if it was needed. Pop a towel under him in case he wees.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 16/03/2015 00:46

He's doing a low growling after his Tramadol, is this the Tramadol talking or is he in pain!?

He's gone...our lovely, daft as a brush boy is gone.

He ingested anti freeze and there was no hope.

I'm heartbroken

Oh bless you Lego, and LegoCat.

That's so sad.

He was in a safe and warm place with his people when he passed on. Flowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/03/2015 07:34

Oh you poor woman, I am so sorry. I would report it to the police when you are more composed. Just in case others have been affected too.

cozietoesie · 16/03/2015 10:01

Oh I'm sorry - and Yes. He was in a warm safe place with his people and more than a little tranquilized.

I'd report it to the police also when you can - and also tell the vet practice when you ring them.

Lonecatwithkitten · 16/03/2015 11:12

Sadly it takes a very small amount of antifreeze to poison a cat a teaspoon is sufficient for a 5 kg cat. So often it is that someones car radiator is leaking rather than anything more sinister.
I am sorry you have lost your cat. Maybe just asking all your neighbours to check their cars.
I was involved with the police in an incident where 6 cats were poisoned over an 8 month period. The performed garden searches and could find no evidence. However, when the police put out an information notice that it was probably a leaking car radiator the problems all stopped.

Thank you....there is a huge cat shaped hole missing in our lives...I'm so, unbarably sad
