cat booked in for GA. What to expect in the aftermath?

For dental work. My main worry is that the day after, I have a very long work day, have to be out from 7 and may not be home until 11 pm. Vet says it will be fine, but I feel nervous not knowing if cat might just need me about for reassurance?

Both my cats (sisters) went for GAs. We brought them home same day & one was still high as a kite on the painkillers & anaesthetic. She went paddling through her water bowl & completely submerged her face in it - I'm assuming she was hallucinating and could see something in the water. She hates getting wet normally but we had to drag her away before she drowned herself. They were completely fine by the next day though.

SparklingCat had a dental last month. She came home and was normal straight away. The time before she was still drowsy and banging into door frames.

Vet advice was to keep inside for 24 hours as the GA affects their ability to judge/jump etc.

The next day she slept the whole day anyway and for the next few days she was sleeping the whole time.

I don't think I've ever noticed an effect lasting longer than a few hours, and certainly not until the next day. I wouldn't worry.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/03/2015 10:03

Could they do it Friday & you pick them up Saturday morning?.

Yay to taking the water bowl up.

cozietoesie · 14/03/2015 13:47

I think it should be fine, MrsBert. The cat will probably just sleep through.

redrubyindigo · 14/03/2015 13:51

My cat was very out of it and fell asleep on the sofa and peed in her sleep. An astonishing amount of pee!

Keep him somewhere low and safe in case he tries to jump.

RubbishMantra · 14/03/2015 14:05

MKitten went mental after his GA.

He sprinted out of his carrier, ran up his (very tall) scratching post, swung around it, pole dancer style, then ran down it head first, like a squirrel. This behaviour carried on until 1am. After taking Cozie's advice, we took him to bed and he crashed out.

chockbic · 14/03/2015 14:09

Good shit, man Wink

They kind of wobble and stagger about a bit. Doesn't take long to get back to "normal" though.

RubbishMantra · 14/03/2015 14:09

ps, But he was back to normal the next day.

Well, as normal as MKitten gets.

cozietoesie · 14/03/2015 16:36

Now that's unfair, Mantra - I'm sure he'll calm down when he gets past - 14 say? Grin

RubbishMantra · 14/03/2015 17:16

You're right Cozie.

Apparently Devons remain kitten-like and mad throughout their lives.

What did I let myself in for?

cozietoesie · 14/03/2015 17:29

Oh I think there's hope. Seniorboy is pretty calm these days. Smile

RubbishMantra · 14/03/2015 19:54

So I only have to wait 20 years? Confused

Yay!

cozietoesie · 14/03/2015 20:34

Well no-one promised tomorrow evening! Grin

(Besides which, you love him to distraction as he is, don't you? Smile)

RubbishMantra · 15/03/2015 10:05

Most of the time.

Curly little monster's curled up in bed with me.

EleanorAbernathy · 16/03/2015 08:58

My old girl had a GA a few months ago and was completely loved up for several hours after, she couldn't stop purring and rubbing vigorously against absolutely everything!

MrsBertMacklin · 16/03/2015 19:18

Thanks everyone. I'm going to be at home on the post-op evening to keep an eye on things and I've arranged to start work late on Wednesday in case she's still feeling the effects.

Quite looking forward to seeing the side effects, now (sorry, cat)!
