that's it really (in the title). have bought/reserved a kitten which i will collect @ 20 weeks as opposed to 13 weeks for various reasons although i thought better for it to be with its mother longer. little wary because i have done extensive homework on this breed and know the coat needs alot of taking care although differing breeders have varying views from combing every day/bath once a week to combing when it needs it/bath once every 6 months... very excited though. lost our cat a couple of weeks ago so focusing on our new family member rather than being upset around the house

I think that Fluffy had one or more Persians before ASBOCat but other posters almost certainly do currently as well. (I know that quite a number of posters have cats with serious hair.) Keep an eye on the thread.

PS - remember that if you start a thread here about a new kitten, you have to post a picture. It's the law! Grin

We only bathed ours if they had poo or engine oil on their coats. I don't see the point in bathing, they usually hate it so why bother?. I'd buy a long hair Furminator & a zoom groom. Furminator for weekly go overs and the zoom for a daily comb. That way you won't get lots of fur balls (buy a carpet shampooing machine anyway)

I wonder why the breeder thinks keeping the kittens so long is good? Queens usually kick kittens out at 16wks onwards by hissing at them & batting them away.

I got ASBO cat at 17 wks and his mum was hissing at him I see why regularly.

I've had several Persian cats over the years, sadly none at the moment, and never bathed them, again why would you they keep themselves clean. Very, very occasionally had to do a bum wash and that was a two man job!

I would recommend you start grooming regularly as soon as you get your kitten to get him/her used to it, it's also good as Fluffy said to avoid them knotting and the fur balls.

They are beautiful cats, what is your like? One of ours was a Blue Male who was a real snooty bugger we were definitely the maid and valet, he lived to a ripe old age too.

The only other thing to mention is eye care and tear staining, particularly if they have very 'pushed in' facial features.

Completely agree with emotion's post.
We've had several Persians, the best cats we've ever had, sadly all passed away now.
Keep bathing to necessary, keeping bum hair area trimmed can help greatly. Get used to grooming early, we used to do ours in the evening when they'd sprawled all over us half asleep Smile

I have 2 Persians. Get into a habit of grooming/nail clipping early. I don't bath mine but have had to use DH beard trimmer to get rid of mattes a couple of times so keep on top of that. My boy likes to go into the garden and if he gets even a tiny big wet his coat mattes.

Mine both have sensitive stomachs so be wary of changing food brands too quickly as well.

They are great cats, I love them to bits. One is spectacularly dumb and is scared of sparrows, the other likes to fetch sticks like a dog!

BlackNoSugar · 12/03/2015 17:05

Yes to the grooming and nail clipping - start that right away, mine needed a quick comb every day and a proper Furminator brush about once a week - but I never bathed her. Ever.

Keep an eye on the paws - you can get little knots inbetween their toes.

I wish we'd got ours used to the hair clipper at an early age, it was hell on earth to clip the inevitable mats out of her fur. (no matter how carefully you brush, there always seems to be one you just don't notice until it's beyond all help). Can you run the back of a buzzing clipper over your kitten, just to get it used to the noise/feel? I would do this if I got any longhair cat now instead of the two shorthairs who shed everywhere Smile

Is it terribly un-MN to be sitting here squeeing? Grin

emotionsecho · 12/03/2015 17:33

and the matted bits of fur are inevitably in the most inaccessible places!

We let ours outside too, they never went far but managed to bring half the garden back in with them in their fur.

emotionsecho · 12/03/2015 17:35

Me jealous much, oh no.

Looks utterly adorable jeans.

jeanswithatwist · 12/03/2015 19:00

is there a special cat hair clipper? i am picturing a shaver rather than scissors....(re hair mats). the people i am getting her from were combing her as she lay on his chest, she didn't seem bothered. it was very hard not to get a cuddle (from the cat, not him)

i am a bit worried about letting her into the garden although don't want to keep her in once she is older/been neutered. we have a pretty but small garden, our old cat loved it in there. Are persians good jumpers? or is that a daft question. our other cat didn't have much of wandering area, pretty much just our garden and our neighbour to one side (who loved our cat visiting her). i keep reading about people trying to pinch/encourage other peoples cats to prefer them to their owners. my friend who lives round the corner has had a cat for about 8 months. clearly not a stray but once a week for the last month when it comes home it has a DIFFERENT collar on. someone keeps taking off my friends collar and replacing it with one of theirs. the cat keeps staying away too, they are basically stealing her cat even though she is the one paying the vets bills. it would break my heart if someone took my cat. previous cat was very pretty, noone took her so am keeping my fingers crossed..

I have no idea if there's a special cat hair clipper but we used a battery-operated beard trimmer, it's only about an inch wide and was perfect for nipping off the odd clump of fur.

emotionsecho · 12/03/2015 23:57

Mine were pretty useless at 'normal' cat stuff such as jumping or climbing and all manner of wildlife were perfectly safe.
