elderly cat - vomiting alot

Our cat is 13 yrs ok and an indoors cat. We rescued her when she was around 4 yrs old, abandoned at a bus stop in a cat box so we don't know her background but has regularly been vetted etc. She Has always been fussy in her eating habits - wont eat from a bowl but has to remove it and eat from floor.
she also will eat any fluff/ threads / fibres she can - licking rugs / mats. We had to remove all of these as she was practically constantly doing this. She has always been quite sick - throwing up a few times a week and has gone through phases of refusing food and then bingeing.

the past week she has been sick about 4 times a day but this weekend we have been finding about 8 piles of vomit a day. We will be taking her to vets tomorrow but wondered if anyone has experienced anything like this?

Bump

Yes. We had this. I'm sorry but it might be early stage kidney failure when the body can't get rid of toxins properly. You might need to start preparing yourself. Could, of course, be something your cat ate.
Deep breath and see what the vet says.

Thanks Sparky. We are preparing for the worst. We woke to little piles of sick everywhere this morning.
there is definitely something up.

Yes. There's little point in speculating when the vet is so soon - and will presumably be running a full battery of tests including blood work etc - but it doesn't sound good. All the best for the vet visit and let us know how it goes.

(By the way - 13 isn't truly elderly in my own books these days, more a sort of high middle age. She's clearly no spring chicken but there are many people here who are starting out with adopted cats of that age or older, even. Smile)

Ta cosie.
dp and her are off to vets now.

she had a funny "turn" this morning. She went stiff, couldn't walk, her tail bent army an angle and them seemed to lose power/ control on one side. Lasted about 2 minutes and she seemed dazed afterwards.

poor thing.

Poor lass. Sounds like a little stroke, maybe. Let us know how things go.

sparkysparkysparky · 09/03/2015 11:17

Been through similar recently -even the only eating off the floor sounds like our girl. She was nearly 15.
Sounds like your cat has been loved and cared for after a dodgy start. Thinking of you and yours.

weeonion · 09/03/2015 12:33

She has been kept in for observation and had bloods done.

cozietoesie · 09/03/2015 12:38

Ah well. Was she dehydrated at all?

When are they to contact you next?

weeonion · 09/03/2015 18:03

Hi cosie. She wasn't dehydrated.

she is in overnight. They will call in morning with an update and bloods due back after lunch.

Best wishes. If you can, keep us updated.

timtam23 · 09/03/2015 20:42

Poor girl. I hope the news is better tomorrow.

weeonion · 10/03/2015 16:06

Pooka cat update.

she is still in vets. They gave her an ant sickness jab which didnt work. She has had a scan and there is a lump in stomach but it may be a mass of fur / fibres. The results of the bloods aren't back yet so they are waiting on those before deciding further action.

just wish we knew!

Thank you for taking the time to update this thread. Thinking of you and yours.

RubbishMantra · 10/03/2015 16:28

Oh bless Pooka Cat.

Have you heard of a thing called Pica? I had to remove the sheepskin rug because MKitten would attack and munch it with gusto. Let alone my Uggs. Confused

Sending healing thoughts.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/03/2015 17:29

Hope she's ok, and that it is something resolvable.

chocolatespiders · 14/03/2015 17:46

How is your cat?

My 21 year old girl was being sick a lot but it was after she had eaten, tests revealed no problems.
She is now better settled on gourmet gold pate mashed with a bit of water.
She is still sick a bit but no where near as much as she was.

weeonion · 15/03/2015 17:20

Hi chocolate - hope yr cat is still well.

pookacat is home with us. Her bloods suggested chronic kidney disease and problems with her liver / pancreas.

she has to go back in through the week for further tests re the mass in her intestines. She is still vomiting and now on white fish to eat.

not looking great but we will just wait to see. Have to collect a urine sample as well- proving a challenge!
