pooing random places

In January we adopts 2 sisters from the same litter from the spca. They are 2 years old, fixed, no known health issues. We took them for their 48 hour v et check, vet was very happy with them.
No accidents at all when they moved in (they are indoor cats and have been their whole lives) or any in the first 3 weeks. At the 3 week mark, we awoke one morning to find cat poo in the bath tub (litter box in not in the bathroom) it was solid, normal looking, just in the wrong place. We had know idea which cat had done it, and thought maybe one of them got closed in the bathroom by mistake. Then 4 days later, we found another random poo on the stairs. And then nothing until yesterday, when I found another poo in the bath tub.
They use a litter box, which is cleaned every single morning, without fail.
They have had no disruptions, or stresses, they seem very happy, relaxed, eating and drinking well.
I just don't get what is happening, and need to find a way to stop it.
Any suggestions or insight?

How many litter boxes do you have? The general recommendation is one for each cat plus one. They often don't like to use a tray that has already been used.

As above - one litter tray between two cats isn't enough if you have one that's even half-way fussy. (And many cats like to have two boxes even if they're a singleton - they don't like to use a soiled box for the other function and as peeing and pooing often follow each other closely, a second box is desirable however quickly you clean.)

I am going to put a new one out right now. Thank you, and I'll let you know how it goes

can the litter boxes be near each other, or should the be in different rooms?
right now the one we have is on the landing at the top of the stairs (4x6 area)

I'd go for in different rooms. Put one in the bathroom.

Definitely sounds like a cat that feels like it has nowhere to go so is trying to avoid mess - a thoughtful cat does use the shower in such situations, I've always been very impressed by their ability to figure that out.

Good luck with the extra tray! If you can, maybe try a twice a day scoop of wees and poos (do you use clumping litter?) as it could be an issue with using a 'dirty' place.

Seniorboy spent many years with highly unsatisfactory toileting arrangements (don't ask) and put up with them with extremely good grace. Since coming to me, though, he's discovered the joys of two fresh trays and has become positively assertive about the ruddy things - comes and announces to me (if I haven't heard) that he's just used his tray and could I clean it please? Right away!

He's lucky now though because I work from home so can generally oblige. Not everyone is in that position.

Hi

We have some similar problems and I've took some advice on it.

You need at least 3 trays (we currently have 5!). Also it's most likely a stress thing so try feliway diffuser.

With our cats we have only had them a week so have been advices to keep them in 1 room only for the next week then let them have one more room a week as it's most likely stress related.

Hope this helps

I suspect that TCN needs to add a 'within reason' clause to that 'one per cat plus one'. (I'm trying to imagine her house with 23 (?) litter trays?)

I had to add that I like the idea of Shaska's "thoughtful cats". :D

BeachyKeen · 27/02/2015 11:31

Well, so far so good

Are both trays being used, Beachy?

BeachyKeen · 27/02/2015 14:35

yup, as soon as we put out the second one, they were happy to test it

we started off with them side by each, then moved it across the landing once they knew it was ok to use, so they are a bit separate

Sounds good. Smile See how it goes, anyway, and best of luck.

MrsSchadenfreude · 27/02/2015 22:32

We got a Feliway diffuser for ours, and one of them started shitting next to it...

cozietoesie · 27/02/2015 23:01

There ought to be a moral there - it's just a bit late for me to work out which.
