House stinks of cat wee...

I came downstairs yesterday morning and it stunk! After lots of hunting around, I have found several spots where the cat has obviously sprayed! (Up doors, up the radiator) I have 2 cats and have no idea which one it could be and have never seen either of them do this. They haven't had a litter tray since being babies and they have constant access to outside via a catflap. No other cats can get in either, so it's definitely one of them!

Have scrubbed everywhere with washing liquid (for clothes...I read the enzymes are good) and have sprayed stain and adour remover, but everywhere still reeks!Confused

I took them both to the vets who thinks the girl cat might have cystitis and has treated her but I'm not convinced as he said I would have found puddles as opposed to spray up things!

Any advice would be so gratefully received! Thank you.

At least two litter trays in case she/they decide not to do their business outside.

Really? I hate litter trays (but I obviously hate cat wee up my walls more!)

They've always been so good about going outside...Confused

I would especially now she's already spray marked your house. Not a habit you want her to get into.

Okey dokey...I'll go and get a tray later. Thanks for your reply. Any tricks for getting rid of the stench?

Personally I would be looking outside. Any new cats roaming about that would make them want to mark their territory?

Scrub around your doors outside as well just in case one is marking the outside and stressing them out.

I didn't even think of outside!!! Thank you, I'll scrub outside too. Good job I love 'em...my house stinks.

I'd get trays, a microchip cat flap and wee stain remover from pets at home.

Then if it happens again you need to take them to the vets.

In addition to putting the trays down, get a black light torch to detect where they've been spraying, so you can get rid of every little bit and they won't be tempted to re-spray the same bit.

There's a TV programme on problem cats with a terrible name (the programme has a terrible name, not the cats, something like Cats from Hell) and a cat expert who looks like a Hells Angel, but it's surprisingly good on things like this. I think he used his own concoction to remove the smell and all traces of pee, but I suspect a specialist wee remover would work too. The programmes are on YouTube.

His tip was to remove the cats entirely for a day or two while you're doing the cleaning, so the cat comes back to an entirely fresh smelling house and is not tempted to re-pee.

Thanks for your advice.
Went out in the garden with the girl cat just before and she cautiously followed me. Low and behold...there stood the biggest black and white cat you've ever seen! She ran back inside and I scared it away.

So...any ideas how to stop this scary cat from coming in to our garden?

When my bosses dog wee'd in the house and it got into the grout, he was told by the trainer to use vodka to remove all traces of the smell to break to habit.

I know cat wee and dog wee aren't the same, but it might be worth a bottle if Tesco own brand?

To get rid of the smell you could try hydrogen peroxide (I think I bought this from local pharmacy) or distilled white vinegar. I've used both of these with some success (used to have 2 ancient cats who intermittently weed around the house when stressed)

Hydrogen peroxide can strip the colour out of things so best to patch test first. Vinegar makes everything smell like a chip shop (temporarily!) but it's better than cat wee Smile

Invest in a supersoaker for scary cat.

HouseHell · 24/02/2015 07:26

Have put litter trays down but they're not using them! Noticing more areas have been sprayed. Any other ideas?
I've ordered one of those feliway plugins too. Confused
Thanks for your advice.
Ps...I may have accidentally sprayed the big bully cat with water last night...

We used a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water and sprayed frequently on the carpet where the cat weed. It took several applications and the house smelled of vinegar for a while, but the cat wee smell disappeared completely.
