One of my kittens only has one testicle, anyone any experience?

My kittens are at the vets overnight waiting for the snip tomorrow.

However, after an initial examination it turns out one of them only has one testicle.

The vet isn't there atm so am waiting on the call tomorrow for more info and avaliable options. The vetinary nurse explained the one testicle almost always turned cancerous and to think overnight about questions I may want to ask the vet.

What questions should I be asking?

And does anyone have any experience of this?

Neutering a male cat means removing the testicles so shouldn't matter if only one.

You should ask for a discount. Wink

It's actually going to cost more Shock

I think she said it's called abdominal castration

Sometimes they will delay it if it is an undescended testicle as it may descend later and if he is tiny they can sometimes be really hard to find!

However if he actually only has one testicle then they will only be able to remove one.

FannyFifer · 18/02/2015 19:51

They must have to go looking for other testicle then, it maybe hasn't descended.
Maybe ask if u would be better to wait till kitten is bigger, if go ahead will it be a bigger incision, are there more risks.

WUME · 18/02/2015 19:53

They are not going ahead with the OP tomorrow.

Why?

You have to call it Hitler though as he's only got one ball Grin

I generally give them up to 6 months of age to descend, then we have to go looking for them (abdominal). Was it not picked up earlier though- are they vaccinated?

MsCoconut · 18/02/2015 20:01

Your cat doesn't look like any of these does he?

Much less invasive if it descends later. Cat castration only takes about 5 minutes and doesn't involve any stitches (usually) whereas routing around in his abdomen is obviously a much more invasive op!

i'd give it up to 6 months, not because I expect an undescended testicle to move, but if it's grown a bit they are easier to find. They are normally both in the scrotum at the time of vaccination and it should have been picked up then. They can either be in the inguinal canal ( groin) or within the abdomen, the surgery takes longer and is a much bigger deal than a routine castration, therefore more expensive, sorry! Abdominal testicles have a higher incidence and later detection of testicular cancer, plus if left he will develop all the Tom cat traits that most pet owners want to avoid.

One of Dh's friends cat was like that, it was a more involved op so it cost more.

WUME · 18/02/2015 20:52

We got him at 10 weeks and he'd had his vaccinations.

If it was picked up we weren't informed when we bought him Hmm

Kitten vaccinations should finish at 12 weeks, so it might be an idea to take your paperwork when you pick him up and ask the vet/nurse to check it for you to make sure they are fully vaccinated.
