Girl kittens mouth is a mess...

The vet isn't sure of what the cause is but the back of my girl kittens mouth is a mess, ulcerated and infected. Anyone have any experience of this?

Am so worried, she is only 9 months Sad

Vet gave her a long acting antibiotic and anti inflammatory today, we have some meds to give her for a week and then back to the vets. The vet said she may need a biopsy and am freaking out that it might be something nasty Sad

Has she been tested for FIV? I have known a couple of cats with similar (worked in a cat rescue for a long time). Both lived long lives, both on prednisolone. One had to have all teeth removed which was traumatic but he managed very well afterwards and it helped him a lot with the condition.

She's a gorgeous tortie! Ours had that ginger flash too. She's a little posie paws too.

I think you shouldn't buy more than a months supply of anything anyway, it's gaurantees they'll refuse to eat it.

Haha fluffy yes thats true!! I tend to pick up the dry food when its on offer, currently eating Wainwrights which they both seem to like, I keep it in a sealed tin but have been meaning to replace it as noticed the bottom of its broken.

Is FIV the feline HIV? I thought that was one of the things she had been immunised against Confused

She is a lovely cat, she isn't that bothered about me but has a strong bond with my dd (9yo) I got her as a surprise for dd but you never know with cats if they will take to one person over another. Luckily girliecat is very attached to dd, will always sit next to her and sleeps on her bed etc. She also gets very upset if dd is upset.

I have had cats all my life and i have never seen a cat try to comfort someone before but girliecat will gently pat dds back if she is crying

That's so sweet, mine doesn't do things like that. Clearly defective.

girliefriend · 07/03/2015 20:17

Just realised I 'know' you from the frugal thread Smile hello!!

Hi!

thecatneuterer · 07/03/2015 20:30

Yes FIV is the cat version of HIV, but rather less serious. And there is no vaccine against it.

It might be worth a complete change of diet to see if it would make a difference. If there's a questionmark over storage mites I would try feeding only wet food for a while. And I would particularly recommend Butchers Classic. A lot of our vets say that there is something about it (the technical bit went over my head) that is good for bad mouths, and it has even 'cured' some cats with mouth problems.

It's worth a try.

girliefriend · 07/03/2015 21:17

Oh right, I could feline leukaemia different - is that what they get vaccinated against?? I am totally confused now!!

Their diet does tend to vary to a certain extent depending on whats on offer, I have to buy wheat free as it upsets my other cats stomach. Luckily they are both not fussy Grin

Girliecat very rarely will eat soft food, she likes 'proper' meat like chicken or tuna but won't eat the rubbish cat food stuff. Will try the Butchers classic though - worth a try!!

Thanks for all your replies Smile

Butchers Classic is also cereal free. I also find it works wonders with cats with sensitive stomachs.

And yes it's the feline leukaemia they are vaccinated against.

girliefriend · 07/03/2015 22:35

Ah o.kay sorry didn't realise FIV and feline leukaemia were different - durr!!

thanks for the tip, will give it a go.
