Cat weeing everywhere

Hi everyone. We've had our cat since Christmas. He started off with one litter tray, but started weeing around the house, particularly on anything resembling a tunnel so his play thing,ds'tent etc. We thought maybe it felt like a litter tray (the house ones if that makes sense) so I ordered another. It's enormous & he used it straight away. He's continued to use both but also continued to wee. It's not spraying up but on the carpet, bed, sofa etc. I've ordered that urine off stuff but has anyone any advice on what we should do to stop it.

get him neutered asap; you really, really don't want a full grown tom cat spraying all round your house. It STINKS!

Lots of cats hate the wooden pellet type litter, if you don't believe me read any of Vicky Halls books.

Anya, I sincerely hope you tried different types of litters before rehoming your cat.

He's microchipped already. We've tried wood pellets & catsan. Are there any other brands that are good?

He does always use his trays to poo (& wee).

Yes, there's cats best and worlds best....can't remember which one I use now but they're both wood, like the pellets but much much finer, like the catsan.

Put trays out where your cat regularly pees - damage limitation! Or put puppy pads out. And try different types of tray and litter until you get it right. Mine likes one with cat's best (I think) and one with a puppy pad, which is like peeing on a nappy! I think she's a bit unusual though, most cats do prefer a fine, sand like litter.

Second the recommendation for Vicky Halls books. Honestly though - neutering first. It could save all this.

I have an indoor male pedigree kitten and will be getting him neutered once he is old enough even though he won't be getting out.
It's not fair for them to have all the pent up energy that they can't use.
Also it stops marking in the house and territorial behaviour.
I really think he needs to be done and no amount of different litter will fix it until he has been. Sorry.

I will be getting him neutered. I was asking about the cat litter as a general question.

Yep, agree some cats hate the pellets. We had one cat started peeing on beds, switched him back to catsan and no issues since.

Definitely neuter.

The one room thing. Territorial cats can get stressed if they have a territory to "defend", and they don't feel they can adequately defend it. So multiple rooms will stress as they can't be in all rooms in case another cat comes in. So they pee, so if another cat comes in in their absence the territory is marked.

Confining to one room reduces stress because the cat can see and physically guard his area. So no need to pee as he is there, ready and waiting for intruders.

Also if he does pee the smell will be confined to a room you can clean, and he will pee less as he's already marked.

So I'd...

Catsan
Confine
neuter- ASAP as he's already teenage and the longer you leave it the more established the behaviours.
Feliway.

There is a cheaper plug in. It's still 20 quid but works just as well. Then it's 20 quid for 2 refills after that.

msrisotto · 06/02/2015 12:19

I've found feliway refills for £13/£14 on zooplus

gamerchick · 06/02/2015 12:32

Everything's cheaper online.. I just go to a shop Grin

msrisotto · 06/02/2015 12:37

Gawd, the prices of those things in pets at home is eyewatering! Grin

gamerchick · 06/02/2015 12:42

I know that's why I get this one Grin really worth it though.

msrisotto · 06/02/2015 12:46

It's about time there's competition to Feliway though, these things are unreasonably expensive.
