How often do you give flea treatment to your kitten?

Our kitten is almost 5 months old and has had Advocate applied 3 times as part of his initial kitten care plan. He is just starting to go outside (he doesn't like it - yet) and we put his flea collar on a few days ago. I just wondered how many times I should apply the Advocate.

I have an older cat (11.5) who I don't recall every having to give flea treatment to other than her collar. We live rurally and there are some strays now and then but otherwise no cats/dogs or livestock regularly nearby. I don't know if I've just been very lucky but the recommendation of applying it every month seems excessive to me.

I was thinking now that we have two perhaps twice a year each would be OK - unless I notice an infestation of course.

Once a month. She's an indoor cat but I can bring fleas home from work so we keep her sorted.

I'd rather keep an infestation out rather than tackle one have to say.

Flea collars can poison cats. Best to just use them in the vacuum cleaner.

I've never heard that before Rubbish - I've always used collars on my cats and never had any problems with them being ill.

It's true, a colleagues kitten nearly died from one. If she hadn't of forgotton something and gone home it would have been much worse than it was.

Seresta are Px only flea collars, their safe. I think it's seresta anyway.

Fluffy is right the majority of non-prescription flea collars contain permethrin which can be toxic to cats.
Seresto is the prescription flea and tick collar it lasts for 8 months so often works out cheaper than non prescription.
Alternatively using a spot on like advocate once every 4 weeks.

OK thank you. I'll have to consider the collar thing. The vet never mentioned anything to us at the appointments and I'm sure we told her our older cat had a collar. I'll ask them about it when we go to get his little operation.
