Kitten driving me mad with litter tray!

She's 9 weeks old. Whenever she's had a poo she scrabbles the litter around for AGES even though it's covered. I change the litter every day so it's not unclean. Could the tray be too small for her?

The covered tray may just be trapping the smell inside so that she's trying very hard to do her duty and get rid of any odour - yet taking a while to do it as far as she knows. What kind of litter are you using?

BluebellBean · 25/01/2015 16:54

Sorry I meant the poo was covered. It's an "open" tray. I'm using lightweight odour reducing litter. Do I need to change more than once a day?

I certainly don't change the litter every day although I use natural clay clumping which is different from yours. (It's what the cats like.) I think they need a tiny bit of odour to their sensitive nostrils to remind them of their duty and clay clumping litter means that you can just lift out and dispose of pee balls and poo solids, add a little bit to what's left and smooth over - you don't get layers of pee/pee solid at the bottom of the tray.

She might just be being very earnest about things because she's young and trying hard. What litter did she have at her original home?

BluebellBean · 25/01/2015 17:06

She had the same that I'm using. I use plastic tray liner bags so avoid touching the poo! Hopefully she's just being earnest as you suggest!

How about trying a covered litter tray? That way she can fling it about to her heart's content. If I didn't have a covered one, my kitchen would be ankle deep in litter every morning.

Agree with Rubbish - if we didn't have covers, one of mine would happily carpet the house in litter every time she went in. The other is extremely polite about it and does a very neat job, so I think it can depend on the cat really.

a nine week old kitten will see the litter tray like a child sees a sand pit lovely to play with makes lots of scrunchy noises and flys very well

Our kitten (8 months) is trying to dig to Australia every time she uses the litter tray. Covered tray is your friend.

cozietoesie · 26/01/2015 21:02

And the minute she goes for a poo, be ready to step in, parcel it up and remove it. She'll have no reason to continue scratching then.

Covered tray good idea. I have one but bought online and is size of a small caravan!

Yes - my covered tray is a godsend but they're not small Grin

Each cat is different. We have a mum and her two (now adult) kittens. Mum likes to make a meal of it after creating a stench that would rouse the dead, girl kitty covers neatly and leaves, and boy kitty flings a few bits over and thinks he's done a good job...
