Getting first ever cat next week. What do I need to know??

We are getting a kitten next week. She will be 10 weeks old. Never had a pet before apart from a budgie!!
I am buying the same food and litter stuff as the breeder is using. Apart from that I am planning on getting a carrier to bring her home in, a soft bed, scratching post and a couple of toys.
Where is best to keep the litter tray? We have 3 floors in our house, bathroom is on top floor with bedrooms and toilet is on ground floor near kitchen/open plan living area. Would be one of these, which one best?
Anything else I really need to know???

Ooh I've got a bengal. What an exciting time for you.

Blu tack everything of value down.

Ha ha will do. I took down my Christmas tree yesterday in preparation!

How's it going?

Hellokittycat · 03/01/2015 09:09

It's going really well thanks! She has settled in so well. Eating fine, using her litter tray fine and seems really happy. Often purring and whenever one of the kids sits down she's straight on their lap for a snooze. Very cute!
I have a couple more questions though if anyone could answer....
Food.... I have iams complete dry kitten food. The breeder said she had been mixing a bit of wet food in to encourage her to eat it which I did first couple of days but today I've just put the dried food in and she's eating it fine, so is it better to have just dry food or shall I mix in wet food still (my mum says they prefer wet food!)
Also, she has a lovely cosy bed but only sleeps on the sofa or on our laps. Will she use her bed once she's more used to it here or is this early preference likely to stick?
Finally, how long to keep her in just the one room? She's in our kitchen /diner and is very comfortable in here. She seems very keen to get out the door when someone leaves though to explore!! Last night I let her look round the lounge upstairs in the evening as she was keen to get out the kitchen. She had a good explore round the room and then slept on my lap while I watched a film up there. Our house is big (3 floors) so I'm worried about her getting lost and not finding her way back to her litter tray if she has the run of the whole house. Is it ok to start showing her other rooms though one at a time with door shut and supervised while we are in there? She seems to like to be with us more than wanting her own space.
Thanks for all the advice, you have been very helpful!!

I'd do a tray on each landing & let her explore. It keeps them amused if nothing else.

Keep her out of bedrooms, she's small enough to get her head stuck in toys/down the side of beds etc.

Bengals like human company so she'll decide who her favourite is and follow them around.

Thanks, will do that! Any thoughts on the food??

I feed cereal free wet, ours is intolerant to cereals so I don't feed dry.

Applaws do a cereal free dry food. Both my boys like it.

I wouldn't do a tray on every floor unless you particularly want your home overrun by litter trays .... I'd just let her explore little and often and keep returning her to her litter tray to cement in her mind where it is. As she's using it properly already I'm sure you'll be fine. Just make sure it's always accessible to her

And I always just feed a good quality dry food - it's much easier. I used 'fish for cats' - have a google. It gives them a lovely sleek coat due to the fish oils in it . A little goes a long way as it's high in fish

( the website is actually called fish4dogs )
