Rehoming to Elderly People

I posted last night about my lovely William being put to sleep. He lived with my Mum and she has already said she wants to think about getting another cat. She's not trying to replace him but she wants to give another cat a home (and it'll have a bloody brilliant home) and she also wants the companionship that you get from a cat.

The problem is Mum is 83 and partially sighted. Does anyone know if charities are likely to rehome to her? Obviously she's looking for an older cat (about 6 or 7 if possible, she doesn't want another very elderly cat) and I live close by so vet visits aren't a problem.

I would much prefer to rehome a cat from a rescue and have emailed at few but I was hoping to get some opinions or maybe ideas of other charities. We are in Surrey.

Thank you in advance.

Great news for all concerned.

He looks nice and squidgy.

Well there's no new pictures of George - every time I tried to take one he nuzzled my phone! I might have to try the proper camera with a zoom so I can take them from a distance!

When I got to Mum's today George was asleep under the table so I laid on the floor and talked to him while leaving a trail of Dreamies. You could tell he was thinking about coming out anyway as he could hear Mum and DH talking in the other room and kept looking as if he was trying to listen. When he came out from under the table he wouldn't leave me alone and was butting me and rubbing all around me. When DH came in George jumped over my legs to make a fuss of him and then kept going back and forth between us.

Is Mum at all jealous? (Not that you can do much if a cat has decided who their 'person' is.)

PinkSparklyElephant · 02/11/2014 17:24

Not at the moment although I did hear her mutter something about me wanting to take him home! I think she was just pleased he seems to like DH and I as we are her most frequent visitors. George spent yesterday evening fussing with her so I think he's sharing his affections equally! He won't see much of me as I'm at work during the week so hopefully they'll have a week of bonding. I may have to pop in on the way home though...

Welcome SparklyGeorge xxxx

PinkSparklyElephant · 02/11/2014 17:40

No! I mustn't look at any more cats! I did look at the Mayhew but it was a little bit too far for us. I won't drive in London and we were unsure whether DH would be able to take us so we decided to start with Old Windsor and work our way through the rehoming centres if it didn't work out.

I really, really want a second cat but I don't think it's possible as we live in a one bed maisonette. If we had a spare room I'd go for it but I don't know how we could keep them separate to start with. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. So far I've suggested we move (can't afford it) or put up a stud wall in the living room (DH said no)!

I think that as long as any favouritism is not too obvious, your Mum might well find it deep-down reassuring that you and George get on. I know that my own Mum was extremely fond of Seniorboy when he was her cat and in her last illness, the fact that he had a home to go to eased her mind a little.

timtam23 · 02/11/2014 22:58

George looks absolutely gorgeous and I think that you & your mum have made a really good choice! Smile

sashh · 03/11/2014 06:50

He's lovely.

The oldest cat I re-homed was a 19 year old cat who went to live with a lady on the lady's 90th birthday.
