How big a gap can kittens get through?

Picking up 2 Maine Coon kittens in 8 weeks. They will be aboit 15 weeks old at this point. Don't have a room we can let them trash confine them in when they first arrive, so planning to use a BabyDan playpen for some of the time - when I'm home they can have the run of the living room, within reason, but overnight and when I'm out we'll pop them in the playpen (we actually have 2 so will link in some extra panels to make it a bit bigger than it originally would be, if that makes sense?)

But will they be able to squeeze through the bars? The gap between the bars is 6cm. Will they be able to jump over it?

My 16 week old kitten can get through this gap :) it's about 3-4 inches!

Oh cute! 3-4 inches is 7.5-10cm? Does he/she just fit or is it easy?

the eye of a needle, and they can vanish into thin air

She gets through it no problem!

I would imagine unless it's really tall that they'd be able to jump it.

Is there a room like your bathroom they could have for when you're not around?

I have visions of you coming into the room to find them sitting by the pen like "Ta Da!".

My 13lb cat can squeeze under the gate if need be, the gaps 3-4".

one of my foster kittens managed to get under the kickboard under my cooker which was about 1.5 inches high even i coulnt believe it as i saw her pour herself through this tiny gap luckily she couldnt get to the sink so i removed the board and got her back, mind you she was more like a 7 week old kitten and not a maine coone and at 15 weeks they dont really need confining they will cause more mayhem in a playen than out, anything you dont want them to scratch put some lemon juice and water in a spray bottle and spray the bits yoyu want to save, kittens hate lemon and it will discourage them from the start

I thought about suggesting filling in the gaps by wrapping chicken wire or something round the playpen, but then realised they will just swarm up that like it's not there Grin

isseywithcats · 23/10/2014 22:47

i would suggest if you want them confined overnight a big dog cage with blankets at one side and a litter tray at the other side would be the best thing ask around if anyone can lend you one or look on ebay cheap enough for a second hand one

Wheres hurr1cane to recount the tail (see what I did there?) of the 3 kittens and the fireplace?

I think the moral of the story was don't underestimate the houdiniesque powers of a kitten!

justabigdisco · 23/10/2014 22:56

My adult cats would squeeze through bars of 6cm!

Galena · 24/10/2014 08:30

Thanks all... Gutted that our plan won't work! Bloomin' houdini kittens!

I think the playpen will be easy for them and they will be jumping out it if they discover they can't get through the bars.
It never fails to amaze me the gaps my adult cats could get through. In fact lazy cat when we had him would squeeeeze through our babydan bars rather than jump over and he was huge.

hugoagogo · 24/10/2014 08:50

My adult, although admittedly runty cat can get through a gap about 2 inches- when determined.
Maine coons are big though aren't they?
