Mooncat is sick and we are currently waiting for the vet to open. She didn't eat yesterday but we saw her about midday with soggy back legs and wondered if she'd sat on something wet. But then she didn't reappear at teatime either and we found her this morning on the wall, not wanting to move. She won't eat and though she can walk she obviously doesn't feel like it. Vet opens at 10 for routines but from 9 if emergency. Sitting here worried. Moonkitten was off his food yesterday a bit too but thankfully seems more himself today.

Really worried she ate something nasty and has got a bug or poisoning, though she isn't smelly or anything Sad

Aw hope mooncat will be ok, maybe it's just something she ate x

cozietoesie · 19/10/2014 08:59

Best of luck. Let us know how she gets on.

Earliest emergency appt 10:40am so have to wait it out. Have had one tiny mew, else she is very very quiet. Does not bode well.

Poor little Mooncat. It's such a distressing time waiting for the appointment because you can't tell them that you are getting them help.

Pipbin · 19/10/2014 11:54

What news? I hope all is well.

timtam23 · 19/10/2014 14:21

Sorry to hear this. How are things, moonbells?

Itsfab · 19/10/2014 18:27

How is MoonCat doing?

moonbells · 20/10/2014 09:19

Sorry for delay in update, vets was running late and so I had to leave straight after I got Mooncat back home for a crazy lunch out and afternoon running around with playdate which at least gave Mooncat a peaceful afternoon without being scared half the time by my noise on legs DS! DH was on catwatch duty.

Vet was baffled, but noted that Mooncat was very sore around the tummy and back end and objected strongly to being handled there. She hates being picked up anyway and has done since we got her, so that wasn't abnormal for her.
Vet has given Mooncat some metacam and told us to come back today if she's no better. She perked up a bit after the metacam and did eat some wet food last night (not much, but some is better than none). Somebody cat-shaped threw up a bit overnight, but not much and we have no idea which one, given Moonkitten's not been eating well either. I've also found where she must have had a bit of a loo accident - so much for my jute shopping bag!

This morning she was desperate to go outside after being under house arrest yesterday. Hadn't used the tray. Out the back she went and reappeared out the front which means she got over the 6' fence. Legs working then!
The awfully soggy back end (which the vet had no idea about - didn't smell like anything you expect!) has dried off and is looking more normal. She still has fleas despite the Program and the Broadline! Grrr!

Remains to be seen if once the painkiller wears off she'll be ok, but so far, so good. I am wondering if they caught and ate something a bit off.

DH at home again today so assuming she comes back in, she has a watching human.

Hopefully it was just a one off and she will be fine now.

What a worry animals are! I have been worrying about a neighbour's dog and it was lovely to see him so jumpy today.

We lost three pets in six months last year and it was heart breaking. We have two new cats now - got them in May 2013 - and I am worried sick about losing them.

moonbells · 22/10/2014 13:04

Another update - and perhaps something for folk to watch out for. TMI warning!

Mooncat is now perking up and last night drank a lot of water, before asking (loudly!) to have something to eat this morning. She was much more her usual self, some 5-6 days after she first went off her food. Phew! When we opened the front door she sprang out like normal.

Moonkitten now has it. Spent yesterday sleeping on chair, one scatter cushion is now ruined from whatever is oozing out of his rear end and the poor thing isn't eating or drinking or moving if he can help it. Just like his mum was on Sat/Sun. So it's catchable, perhaps a tummy bug, but only lasts a few days. Doesn't help poor MK though - he is not a happy camper and we can't tell him that he'll get over it soon!

A friend in Oxford has an older cat with similar symptoms. We were comparing notes yesterday. Could something be going round?

Thanks for that moonbells - poor Moonkitten.

It does sound like an infectious agent of some sort given that he now has it. Maybe one of the vets who post will comment.

Is your own vet running any tests at the moment?

moonbells · 22/10/2014 13:31

Vet said she'd run tests if MC hadn't improved by Monday. We got asked to go back in if she hadn't (as if we wouldn't!) but she had improved markedly, so we didn't go back. Vet was threatening tummy X-rays and bloods!

cozietoesie · 22/10/2014 13:52

I think I'd give them a quick buzz and tell them that Moonkitten is now down with it - see what they say.

Have you noticed any new cats around the area in the last week or so?

moonbells · 22/10/2014 14:46

Not really seen any new ones. Will try and remember to phone when I get in tonight! Might ask the neighbours if I see any - we have a very large cat population on the street and they might have had similar illnesses recently.

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 22/10/2014 15:13

A good idea to phone then. I may be unduly paranoid but I always get edgy when I don't know what might be wrong - and even though your other cat seems to have recovered fine (as Moonkitten will hopefully) you just can't tell how an infection is going to react with different animals and their particular systems, humans included. Probably best to have the vet onside and to let them know at least that there's something nasty doing the rounds.
