Anyone else's cats 'starving' and acting as if they need to bulk up for the winter?

My two Burmese boys are suddenly acting like they've never been fed. Jumping up to eat cheese left for a milisecond on the side, tripping me up in the kitchen all the time, yowling at me. And the one of them that we used to hardly see is around all the time. I think it might be that he had another source of food which has now dried up because I'm feeding them the same food and nothing has changed here. Or maybe it is a 'fatten up for the winter' thing. I don't remember them doing it last year though (they're only 2). Has anyone had the same experience?

They do seem to know when winter's coming. Maybe you should lay in some candles and kindling? (Sort of like judging the weight of berries on the trees - maybe there's a hard one approaching.)

Our lady (moggy, 12 years old) has always been like this. I think it's a combination of winter fattening and fewer small creatures around (we live in the country so it's been happy hunting season for the past few months. She always gets noticeably plusher as well, but since she isn't completely tame/easily handled, I can't get a feel to see whether it's extra fur or extra pussycat Grin

My big ginger fur ball is behaving exactly the same, seems to think that every time someone stands up they are going to feed him six people in our house so he is normally successful
He has also taken to staying in at night, during the summer months we hardly saw him.
He looks beautiful at the moment, thick glossy fur, I think they are preparing for winter too. Could be wishful thinking though, I love the snow and cant wait for the mn snow threads to start.Grin

Yes mine are eating about 50% extra! I think the sudden drop in temp has done it or is it because they know we've got a bad winter coming and they're getting some meat on their bones!

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/10/2014 18:36

Yes, 5 trays in one day. He's coming in at night at 7ish.

NormHonal · 10/10/2014 18:36

Yes, my old lady (14) has been at it too, demanding an extra meal a day and not taking no for an answer!

I took her to the vet to check and he said at her age it could be thyroid but as she has been losing weight anyway, to take cues from her about how much food she needs.

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 10/10/2014 18:36

oh yes same here. Shouting at me they are!!

Yahboosnubs · 10/10/2014 19:37

Oh good, it seems normal then. And actually, if I think about it, they didn't eat as much in the summer. So they're laying in the fat stocks now. OK, I shan't be stingy then! Thanks, all.

Well my cat who has been out all summer has recently taken to sleeping unprovoked on my bed so yes I think they do respond to the colder weather...

flanjabelle · 14/10/2014 23:54

Yep my cat is eating me out of house and home. I usually top up her dry food once a day, but it's empty by lunch time now!

moonbells · 15/10/2014 08:58

Ours are doing this too. Last Thursday the little sods con artists pulled the WE'RE STARVING routine on DH after I'd fed them both and gone to take DS to Beavers. Got back in and he'd fed them again as they were both sitting by empty foodbowls miaowing. Angry Grin

shaska · 15/10/2014 10:05

Yes! Caught white cat eating peanuts yesterday, she gave me a sad look as if to say 'look what I am reduced to, you evil fiend', so they're on a temporary regime that includes lunch on demand.
