Rescue cats in London

We live in a residential area of London where the roads are reasonably busy during the day (but not a main road).

6 weeks ago we took on a rescue cat after our address was cleared by the charity (they said they wouldn't let cats live on a main road) but 2 weeks ago she was run over and killed Sad.

The charity lady told me that its nearly always a young cat that gets killed on the roads as if they get to 2 years old, they've developed a little bit of road sense (ours was 1). She had a garden of her own plus lots of neighbours gardens to explore but went further.

I've got an appointment tomorrow to take on another pair of cats but I'm worried that they're both young - 8 months mum, and 8 weeks son - didn't realise how young the mum was when we arranged). I really don't want anything nasty to happen to any more cats in my care - do you think I should cancel seeing these two (they're being fostered) and find an older cat who might roam less?

Yes I would definitely go for a much older cat/cats. Can you confine them to your garden by adding special netting to the tops of the fences?: www.protectapuss.co.uk/cat-fences/?gclid=CMHO-ObgoMECFQMUwwod3AYAzQ

I think I'd be looking at middle aged cats really - around 8 years or more.

Thanks for the reply, I have seen the cat fencing but its not something we can realistically do in our garden (without replacing all the fences).

Ok, had been worrying about the age-thing so good to get a second opinion.

Which charity is it? (I'm with CHAT)

loraflora · 10/10/2014 16:30

When I rescued in London (again, near but not on a main road) they let me take on a female cat but not a male as they thought he'd stray too far, even when neutered. She was two, now 7 and has always been on the lazy side so can't be arsed to leave the confines of the garden most of the time. My previous cat was 4 when we got her so I've no experience with younger ones.

It's Cats Protection, I had a chat with the foster 'mum' this morning and she said she'd been worried about us taking them as well (I'd mentioned the accident to her). So they're staying safely where they are.

I've had a call today from our local Cats Protection lady who says she has found a good cat for us but I haven't yet managed to speak to her, I hope it's not a youngster.

I did look on the CHAT site but it just seems to have pictures and no information (no ages or back story?), but then I'm looking on a tablet.

Lora, yes I'd like a lazy girl age 2+ Smile

Our website is brand new, so we are still ironing out glitches. On my laptop I can see all the details of the cats, not just photos. And I can click on the photo/basic description and it takes me through to a lot more detail.

In fact I'd be grateful if anyone else reading this on something other than a computer/laptop could try it and let me know if they can see more than just the photos and can click through. Next week is the deadline for our tech support to sort stuff out free of charge, so all input welcome: www.celiahammond.org/our-animals/canning-town

I've just had a look at the website (on a laptop so no help there, sorry) and I'm amazed at how people treat stray cats - throwing things at them and poking them??? When I was adopted by the local stray I bought a kennel and a load of cat food!

I would adopt Reg if I could.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2014 12:50

I can Click through and see more pictures.

Course, now I want to adopt all of them especially Betty

thecatneuterer · 12/10/2014 12:57

Fluffy - are you using a tablet?

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2014 12:59

Yes, ipad on iOS 6.

Do you want me to check on Dh's ipad? His is on iOS 8.

thecatneuterer · 12/10/2014 13:01

All checks welcome:) Thanks!

wantacatplease · 12/10/2014 17:19

I want to adopt them all too, but especially Tia. Sad

On laptop so no help with tech stuff.

Just for another recommendation themayhew.org based in NW10

patienceisvirtuous · 12/10/2014 17:28

What about building them a pen? So they are mainly indoor cats but have access to a safe outside space? That's what we plan to do...
