Cost of neutering male kittens

hanette · 06/10/2014 19:56

Hi - i now have two boy kittens (hurrah) and will be getting them neutered at 6 months in December. My local vet is £110 for each cat for neutering.

It's been a while since I had kittens but I was slightly taken aback by the price. I'm in North London. Can anyone advise if that's the norm. Fair do's if it is, and I'll just pay of course but was wondering if this is average?

TIA

I've just had my two done at 16 weeks and it worked out at just under £100 for both of them.

rosieposey · 06/10/2014 19:58

But i live in Devon, that sound a lot for just one though?

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/10/2014 20:02

That's london prices for you, my cousin in the SE paid similar.

beautifulgirls · 06/10/2014 20:20

I would phone around and ask for costs, check if there are any extras charged on top though for things like the buster collar or pain relief so you are sure you are comparing like for like. It does sound quite expensive.

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/10/2014 20:39

We are just in the South East and you could get two done for just on £110. Though were are not close to North London. There are some specialist neutering clinics in your area try phoning round.

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2014 20:41

If you can get them to Canning Town we charge £20 and advise doing it at four or five months www.celiahammond.org. We also charge £10 per vaccine and £10 for a microchip.

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2014 20:42

Failing that Pets at Home seem to be generally quite reasonable.

Queenofknickers · 06/10/2014 21:02

Was just about to say get to Celia Hammond (CHAT) - they did our boy for £40.

hanette · 06/10/2014 21:02

Wow thanks everyone for replies. Very interesting the difference in price! I will ring around in the morning for sure. Is Celia Hammond a charity? Wouldn't want to use their valuable resources as I'm working full time, but sounds like this particular surgery is a bit steep!

Queenofknickers · 06/10/2014 21:03

Sorry, thecatneuterer will be more accurate with CHAT fees! We had our girl done at the same time, maybe she was £40,.,

Queenofknickers · 06/10/2014 21:05

Celia Hammond is a charity but we always ask what it costs and then make a donation on top if we can afford it so that they aren't out of pocket. They are a wonderful charity IMO.

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2014 21:06

Queen of Knickers - we charge £20 for boys and £25 for girls. Maybe you paid for a vaccine as well? Or a microchip? Or that was the cost of both of them together.

OP, yes we are a charity, but we can cover our costs with the fee we charge and even make a tiny, tiny profit, so it's fine to use us for neutering. Our general vet consultations and treatment though are only for people on low incomes and who don't qualify for PDSA help.

pegster · 06/10/2014 21:07

We're £44 in Bath

hanette · 06/10/2014 21:28

Well that's amazing. If I went to CHAT I could afford to get them done, give a chunky donation and it would still be a fraction of the cost of going locally.

I'd rather support a charity than fund the swish building locally!

How does it work at CHAT, do you stay with them all day or drop off and vine back? Wouldn't be worth going back to North London and going back east - I could hang out there for a few hours and pick them up afterwards?

I'm not sure as mine were done from the Sussex sanctuary (and I think they were chipped at the same time which is probably where I got £40 from!) but thecatneuterer will know about London Smile

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2014 21:47

You drop them off between 9 and 930. And then you pick them up normally at around 4pm. So that might be a long time for you. With a private vet you get the advantage of definite time slots. With us they all arrive at the same time and then it's just pot luck which gets done first, but pick up time for them all is around 4pm ish.

hanette · 06/10/2014 21:58

Wonderful I'll do that for sure. I used to live east a few years ago, I'll go and check out my old haunts!

And the expensive local vets was drop off and pick up same times you quoted, so not much more convenient really

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2014 22:00

OK, but don't wait until they're six months. Do it at four and a half - five maximum.

girliefriend · 06/10/2014 22:03

That is really steep Shock

We went to Companion Care in Pets at Home and I think for my boycat it was about £40 and £60 for my girl cat.

Think £100 for a tom cat is ridiculous!!

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2014 22:05

Yes Pets at Home seem to be more reasonable than most private vets.

hanette · 06/10/2014 22:23

Oh even better - DH has work contacts over there and said he'll take then down in the car, have meetings there during the day and bring them back at 4! Hurrah I don't even have to do anything except be the welcoming committee with cuddles and treats at home!

You could also try Village Vet, they have practices in London:
www.villagevet.co.uk
The Cambridge branch charges £43.70 for neutering a male cat.
