new (?) complete flea & worm drop-on treatment - Broadline

I seem to remember Lonecat mentioning months ago that she'd heard something about a new product on the way which treats everything (including tapeworm)

My cats were in for vaccs last month & when I asked they said they'd just been told about it but hadn't got any yet. I've ring today & they've got some in \link{http://www.vetuk.co.uk/pet-meds-prescription-only-broadline-c-21_2047/broadline-spot-on-solution-for-large-cats-3-pack-p-20304& now I've got the name I've found it on vetuk too}

I suspect my vet will be charging a lot more - they haven't got a price yet! But I'll pay their price to get it off the shelf & sort out a prescription or a discount later. It's getting on for twice as much as Advocate on vetuk but I am hopeless at giving tablets so it's worth it not to have to try!

I've used it on Seniorboy (had to get the vet to order it in) and it worked fine - I especially liked the neat applicator. I'm not sure I'll continue it because Seniorboy's risk from worms is pretty minimal so, arguably, he doesn't need such regular treatment for both fleas and worms. It seemed OK though.

I can't remember how much they charged I'm afraid. I'm sort of punchy with vet costs and tend just to hand over the bank card (once I've found it and wiped its tears away) every time I go. I'm usually paying for more than one thing anyway.

Thanks, cozie Smile

My credit card has much the same reaction at the vet's! I think it's worth it though as my cats do go out - they don't catch any wildlife to the best of my knowledge but I don't know what they might eat while they're out

Their definition of 'small' vs 'large' is interesting but I suppose for most cats the Advocate 4kg crossover is a bit iffy, esp if they haven't been weighed recently. Most ordinary cats must fall between 2.5-7.5kg?

My kittens had this only this week.. I can't remember how much it was exactly but a pack of 3 wasn't cheap. It comes in different weights, so girly baby had the under 2.5 and boy baby the 2.5+ one. It will be interesting to see if they have one for him if he gets as big as my previous boy maine coon who weighed 22 pounds Grin

I think it's a great idea... much easier than trying to shove worm pills into them, and my vets are pretty good at recommending stuff.

cozietoesie · 02/10/2014 22:27

Just re-reading this and I think I gave the impression that my vets are fleecing me - and actually, I think they're treating me very fairly indeed. I'm up there a lot (with the poor old cc) but that's really because they're just down the road so easily visitable, Seniorboy's various meds are out of sync, and the library and LIDL's are on the way. By and large, I get a good deal from them and I seem to remember thinking at the time that they weren't ladling profit onto the Broadline sale - although I can't now remember how much it was.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 02/10/2014 22:53

I didn't read your post that way, cozie (if it helps) - vets just are expensive!

I'm picking up my Broadline tomorrow, I'll report back on how much they charge me for it

Medusa, I expect they'll come up in due course with a Superlarge dose for cats like Maine Coons!

It appears to have the same active ingredient as frontline. (Fipronil) frontline has stopped working in our area so i imagine this will be much the same.

cozietoesie · 02/10/2014 23:09

That's the only thing which gave me pause for thought, LEMming. Maybe their development process was overtaken by events because it's a darned good concept.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 02/10/2014 23:11

Do you know which bit does what, LEM? below are the active ingredients for Advocate, Frontline & Broadline.

Advocate & Frontline share butylhydroxytoluene
Frontline & Broadline share fipronil

Advocate spot-on solution for cats and ferrets is a clear yellow to brownish solution containing 10 % imidacloprid and 1.0 % moxidectin with benzyl alcohol and Butylhydroxytoluene 1 mg/ml (E 321)

Frontline for Cats Information; Each pipette containing 0.5mls of 10% w/v fipronil combined with butylhydroxyanisole (E320) and butylhydroxytoluene (E321)

Broadline is a topical solution containing fipronil, (S)-methoprene, eprinomectin and praziquantel

As far as i can remember fipronil kills adults. S mehoprene sorts larvae (i think) that is present in frontline too. I can't help but think the broadline name came because it has other ingredients to do the worms etc. Id stick with advocate and drontal to do the tapeworm.

I wonder if fipronil has come off of patent now as bob martins spot on has fipronil in it. Shock

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 03/10/2014 17:46

Well that was interesting! The nurse looked at both packets & sounded a bit doubtful - they are made by the same company so it does look rather like an attempt to leapfrog Frontline's recent bad name Hmm

Anyway she said they usually recommend Stronghold - which I've not really come across before - so I got that...£44 for 6 doses (less than they used to charge for Advocate)

She recommended a spot-on wormer that wasn't Drontil, but she only had one dose in so she's ordering some more. Can't remember what it was called.

It's complicated, isn't it Confused

Drontal even Grin
