Cat litter driving me bonkers

Seriously, it is EVERYWHERE. I am having to sweep it up several times a day and it ends up in almost every room. I'm using Catsan at the moment and wondering if anyone can recommend cat litter that doesn't end up out of the litter box so much?

My cat is quite big and has a large enclosed cat litter tray, but wondering if it would help if I got an extra large one (from what I've seen on Zooplus, they dont' actually look much bigger than the one I've got but do have a bigger cat flap bit).

I have a ribbed mat outside his tray that catches some of it but a lot of it just falls out as he zooms out of the flap.

I feel your pain. It just gets everywhere doesn't it? I use wood pellet stuff and it doesn't seem to get everywhere as much as other types, IME.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/09/2014 10:30

Wood pellet here too.

OversteppingBoss · 27/09/2014 10:37

Biocatolet is even better than wood pellets - it's made from recycled newspapers, pelleted, so you don't get the sawdust that you do from pee'd on wood pellets. Can also be composted, so pretty green.

We had a cat whose hobby it was to see how much litter he could get out of his tray. As he was young and agile I eventually took a large plastic container with high sides and put his litter tray into it. He didn't seem to mind jumping in and out and it contained the litter very effectively.

WestEast · 27/09/2014 10:39

I use biocatolet, it's paper based and in big clumps that don't seem to break up too much so when she kicks she doesn't seem to kick out too much. However she's still a kitten (4 months) so size might have something to do with it.

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 27/09/2014 12:01

Woodchip here too. Clumping gets everywhere and my older cat refuses point blank to use biocatolet! With two kittens and one cat I am going through a LOT tho and have to sweep and empty every day!

However.. I always try and scoop poos into the loo. Not a problem with a small amount of litter but if you dump too much wood chip litter with it, it reforms into a log and involves a blocked loo, rubber gloves and much swearing Grin I won't do that again....

whethergirl · 27/09/2014 12:45

Thanks everyone, I will try Biocatolet and wood pellets.

That's a good idea LastingLight - not sure if i have room to do that at the moment but will have a think about that.

What's double annoying is that every time I sweep up around his litter tray, my cat takes that as a prompt to go in his litter tray and rearrange the litter. Then jumps out and spreads litter everywhere again....

The plastic container I happened to have was only slightly larger than the litter tray - maybe 10cm in width and 5 in length, so it didn't take up much more space.

This drove me demented, especially first thing in the morning, when I saw my sofas and floor covered in dust or bits. I will never again use clay litters, and after much trying of different types, have found my forever litter.
Cats best natures gold from zooplus.
Clumping, so box stays fresh after removal of clumps, and big, heavy pellets that don't travel far or attach themselves to furry paws/tails.
I can honestly say that it changed my life. Hides smells pretty well too.
My cats were relieved that I stopped threatening them with Battersea cats home. WinkGrin

Beautifullymixed · 28/09/2014 22:16

Oh, and I also use wood pellets when awaiting an order, or run out.
The pellets are great, but imo you can't beat clumping. I hate leaving wee in the litter box, and not keen on the sawdust palaver either........

whethergirl · 29/09/2014 22:01

Thanks Beautifullymixed I will give that one a go, I order his food from Zooplus anyway and I also prefer clumping. I'm quite excited about trying it now (what has my life become!).

3 things that seem to limit litter spreading here:

  1. covered tray which has a perforated step they have to cross to exit, which removes some litter from their pads (\link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/colour-Curver-Litter-Style-toilet/dp/B009UHRSMW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412024607&sr=8-1&keywords=curver+cat+litter+box\this one})

  2. a litter tray mat from Pets at Home (\link{http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/cat-litter-trays/pets-at-home-litter-mat-grey-small?pageSize=39#\this one, but a larger rectangular one probably better - I got this when they were kittens}) removes most of the rest

  3. Oko Plus Cats Best litter which is amazing - one fill (4.5-5 litres, which costs about £2-2.50 when bought from zooplus) lasts at least 4 weeks with 3 cats using the same tray (I know they're meant to have a tray each but luckily mine don't mind) & the texture means it doesn't track nearly as much as others

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 29/09/2014 22:16

also, with cats best, you can flush the solids (poo & clumped wee) down the loo & the remainder, when you empty it, can go in the green composting bin

whethergirl · 29/09/2014 22:20

Thanks NicestSmile I do have a covered tray and also this mat which does remove some of the litter from his paws but still loads more is traipsed all over the house.

Oko Plus looks good, I will definitely give all the ones mentioned a go to find the one that works the best for us.

Oko plus is a great litter, clumps beautifully and hides smells- but the bloody tracking Shock
Like a porridge factory in your house, bed, floors......
Cats best natures gold is it's sister litter, unfortunately more expensive, but worth it's weight in gold. It doesn't clump as well as the oko plus, but it's fantastic to see a neat room and floor. The few pellets that drop, are easily picked up and thrown back in.
I have the modkat litter box, which is a top entry box, so most of the litter falls back in as they jump out.
Try both and see which one you prefer.
It will revolutionise your life. Grin
