Mr Cory stole naice ham and is now listless

Little tabby tinker inhaled a whole packet of M&S ham yesterday. I was worried about him earlier as he was just lying weakly around all day, but then he stole some stuff out of my handbag (Dreamies) when I was in the bath.

Should I worry or am I being PFC? I am fretting faintly he hasn't drunk enough.

It will be the salt in the ham as it is toxic to cats.

List of dangerous foods here

PFC. Definitely. He will sit and think for a while, do a massive poo and then be back to his normal thieving self.

Now, if you would care to psychoanalyse DCat who apparently can't poo in front of newcat (although not otherwise worried by him) then I would be grateful. I suspect she is trying to wear me down into letting her out, but it's not happening until NewCat is more comfortable in his surroundings (he's a bloke. Inhaling a lamb chop does not mean he is comfortable. Apparently according to DH.)

I love that you keep Dreamies in your handbag! Grin

If you're worried he hasn't drunk enough, mix a tablespoon or two of water into his wet food. I do it all the time with my two, to ensure they get enough water. Cats don't have much of a thirst trigger.

I'm not surprised he lay around after eating a whole pack of ham, he must have been stuffed.

Is he better this morning?.

cozietoesie · 27/09/2014 08:40

With the amount of sodium in ham (even seriously naice stuff) it's not real good for them so it's not something I would normally give them a taste for (Stop poking, Seniorboy) but I suspect that on this occasion he was just fu as a puggy and overcome by meat overload.

How is he today?

Thank you all so much. My precious little fudgeball is all right. I am slightly embarrassed that I raised the alarm for the little lad's, er, overeating.

He has also eaten 2 tins of Sheba in 24 hours and I have bought him some cat milk to rehydrate. He wants my tuna sandwich now.

I know about the perils of ham, I have to virtually keep it in a safe, it's his favourite.

Goodness - what's to be embarrassed about?

(The little pig! Grin)

He knew it wasn't just any old ham. It was M & S ham...

Aprilissa · 03/10/2014 11:54

Golly my kitten adores ham..its her absolutely favourite food...I never realised it was dangerous for catsShock

cozietoesie · 03/10/2014 13:14

I think 'dangerous' is probably too strong a word. It's not toxic in the sense that some other human foods are toxic but even good ham has a lot of sodium in it which can be difficult to process in excess for any animal - especially as she ages. I wouldn't be giving it to her in large quantities but as the occasional treat, I would be fairly relaxed. (Unless she was to develop a problem with eg her kidneys in which case your vet might advise no salt-containing foods at all if you could help it.)

Other posters (including the vets who post) might have different views though.
