Is a weekend long enough to settle new cat?

Long term lurker here but now need some advice please and I know that this is the best place to get it

I currently have a 2year old neutered male and I've had him since he was 10 weeks old. He is the most laid back cat I've ever met

My mum recently adopted a young male cat but unfortunately it looks like she's allergic to cats! She has a dog allergy but had no idea that cats would cause the same reaction She's tried taking antihistamines but it seems to be getting worse not better.

My mum is obviously devastated so I've offered to try and see if her cat can live here before she thinks about sending him back to the rehoming centre. Her cat is also very placid and has been neutered.

Problem is I work full time so would need to bring her cat home on a Friday evening and then try to spend that weekend settling the cats. I know it can take a while for the cats to be completely comfortable but do you think we'll have a good idea just based on those few days? Also, do you think it would be ok to go back to work on the monday and leave them in the house?

I do have a dining room that I can shut off from the rest of the house so would it be ok to put the new cat in there while I'm at work on that monday?

Thank you for reading all of this! Just really want this to work because we don't want to sent him back, he is such a sweet boy and he'd been in the cats home since March

Thanks again Smile

I think if you shut new boy in a seperate room for a week it would be kinder anyway, so he gets used to one new room first. As long as he has food, water, litter and company when you are home he will be fine and feel far more secure than being loose in a new home with another cat. Certainly the best chance for them to get along!

I've had my kittens nearly a month now and our other resident cat still hates them Sad so I wouldn't be surprised if they take a while to be ok together.

Glad you can do this for him!

I agree - don't leave them on their own together, just set Newcat up with his own room, food and litter tray and make sure Currentcat can't get at him. They'll know the other one is there (same as we'd know if there was another person in the house) but they won't be able to maim or kill each other.

Then when you're at home you can let them meet briefly under controlled conditions and see how it goes.

You're v lovely to give Newcat this chance by the way!
