cat at emergency vet - handholding needed please

Got woken up at 1am by our ex-Dubai street cat yowling at the front door. My first thought was 'bloody hell Shuri - what's wrong with the cat flap' but he was being really insistent so I went downstairs to let him in. It was immediately obvious something was badly wrong - he was trailing his back leg and had a big cut on his head. Rushed him to the emergency vet which thankfully is only ten minutes away. It looks like there's some neurological damage and the vet needs to check for internal injuries. He's having x-rays and ultrasound and they'll call me first thing with the results. He's such a fabulously lovely and loving cat I'm keeping everything crossed he's OK. He never normally goes out at night - I thought he was upstairs with one of the children. Thankfully he is insured so we won't be faced with making decisions about his care based on cost. I'm knackered but can't sleep.

Oh no :( lucky that you heard him.

He is in the best place. Fingers crossed there is good news in the morning xx

momnipotent · 20/09/2014 02:30

Hoping for good news in the morning for you. Try to rest, he will need looking after when he gets home!

mollypollly · 20/09/2014 02:34

Best of luck OP, I have my fingers crossed for good news in the morning xxx

SublimeCorpse · 20/09/2014 02:38

Oh, your poor boy Sad

I can imagine how you must be feeling and it's no wonder you can't sleep. It's awful when something happens to one of your pets, they're like another child aren't they?

Really hope that tomorrow morning brings good news - do let us know.

Cirsium · 20/09/2014 02:38

Really hoping for a good outcome for you. Poor moggy.

soddinghormones · 20/09/2014 02:47

Thank you .. he has the loudest miaow I've ever heard - everyone in the street knows him as he likes to sit on the wall in our front garden and talk to people going past. He had laryngitis a few days ago so I'm so glad that he'd recovered from that as he'd lost his voice......

I know everyone thinks their cat is special but he really is - he spent his first year on the streets in Dubai and then attached himself to dh who was working out there. We flew him back to London at vast expense but he's been so worth it. He's more like a dog in many ways than a cat - he follows me around the house when he's awake and constantly chats to me. At first I thought he was complaining but then I realised it's just his accent! He's got an amazingly loud purr too and loves being cradled like a baby and having his tummy stroked. He has such a loving nature and has bonded so completely with us that it's hard to believe he didn't have any human contact until he was almost fully grown.

I'm going to try to get some sleep now - am dreading having to explain to the children in the morning

Oh how horrible. I have two lovely cats of my own and would be devastated if something like this happened to either of them. I truly hope your wee man is ok.

RubbishMantra · 20/09/2014 05:43

Oh no! I remember reading about your boy Shuri when I first began hanging around the litter tray.

Sending positive thoughts to both of you.

soddinghormones · 20/09/2014 07:43

Update: he's got a dislocated hip but no sign of internal injuries (phew) - his head wound has been stitched up and he's on strong painkillers so is quite comfortable at the moment. Emergency vet will be talking to our normal vet to come up with a treatment plan. I feel very, very relieved!

monopoly123 · 20/09/2014 08:43

Glad he had a positive night and no sign of internal injuries. Hope he makes a full recovery quickly.

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/09/2014 08:47

I'm glad the update was positive. Sending healing vibes to your precious kitten. I hope he's home soon

Itsfab · 20/09/2014 08:50

Thank goodness it doesn't sound as bad as you feared but you must be still very worried.

My cat has come home minus his collar and with his paw bleeding and that was bad enough for me so huge sympathy to you.

Let us know how he gets on.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/09/2014 09:11

I'm so glad he's going to be ok. Poor cat.

Was it a car?.

soddinghormones · 20/09/2014 09:51

We're assuming it was a car but he's normally pretty good on the road - he survived Dubai traffic and our street is usually very quiet - so don't know for sure

He will probably need surgery so he's not been given any breakfast which will Not Go Down Well Confused

Gratuitous photo showing his gorgeousness (and why I no longer have a window box ... Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/09/2014 09:57

His markings are so different to uk cats aren't they?. Obviously plants were in his way there.

soddinghormones · 20/09/2014 10:01

There's no doubt he's a foreigner Grin even before he opens his mouth his ears are a giveaway...

He'll be operated on early, the vet nurses won't want to listen to hours of "bowl empty" miaows.

clayspaniel · 20/09/2014 10:16

He looks gorgeous! Wishing him all the very best.

Itsfab · 20/09/2014 10:45

Adorable!!

cozietoesie · 20/09/2014 14:53

Fingers crossed for Shuri. You'll be locking the catflap at night from now on?

PinkSparklyElephant · 20/09/2014 18:35

He's gorgeous. Good luck to him today.

soddinghormones · 20/09/2014 20:40

The vet didn't operate today after all - he wants to see how things settle down over the next 24-36 hours. It looks like there's some damage to the nerves going to his leg but everything's so inflamed and painful it's hard for them to assess how bad it is. There was some blood in his bladder but that's been flushed out and there's been no fresh bleeding and the structure looks sound. He's eaten (lots) and is chatting to the vet nurse so on the whole they're pretty pleased with him so far. If he's stable overnight we'll be able to bring him home tomorrow and then take him to our regular vet on Monday. I am very very tired so in a way am quite relieved he's hospitalised tonight as I wouldn't be able to sleep at all if he were home and not well.

cozie the cat flap will definitely be locked from now on - I'd been lulled into a false sense of security as I don't think he's ever gone out at night before. He normally goes to bed when I do and stays curled up all night but sometimes I go to bed later than he'd like so he toddles off upstairs with one of the children which is what I thought he'd done last night :(
