Cost of dental treatmeant

I've posted here before about the state of my cats teeth. I know they're awful and I've tried everything I can to stop them getting any worse. I took the advice I was given here and spoke to the vet about it.

£1000!!! It's going to cost £1000 to get him sorted! He needs at least 4, possibly 8 teeth removed. It's not covered by our insurance and I just can't afford to do it. But I've seen the full extent of the problem now, before he wouldn't let me near them so it was only when the vet got his mouth open that I could see how awful they are. I can see how much pain they must be causing him and the vet said leaving it will lead to infection and more pain/problems.

What can I do?

Also while I'm here, he keeps getting into fights with other cats & coming home with scratches and bald bits. Is there anything I can do to discourage it?

Where abouts in the country are you? Are you being referred to a specialist?
£1000 is about the price in my area for total extractions.

Have you tried vets in poorer areas? Mines in a rough area but is very reasonably priced.

You'd need to see them for a consult but if they quote you a lot less its money saved.

I'm north kent right on the London border. It's not a particularly wealthy area but the vets is part of a chain of about 4 and he'd be going to their 'hospital' site to have the extractions.

I did wonder about getting a second opinion but the consultation alone cost me £50!

But if the quote for the dental comes in at £750 you're still £200 up.

Could you get to the Medway towns.
My two cats have had both dental work and I've never paid that much.
I can recommend a vet surgery if you want.

SmilingandWaving · 18/09/2014 16:33

That's true Fluffy & is probably what I'll end up doing.

Isee that would be great if you could. Funnily enough when I had a quick google of cheaper vets quite a few Medway ones cropped up. Obviously I don't really want to compromise on his care though so a recommendation would be great.

OOh that seem really expensive, my old cat had to have all his teeth removed apart from four, a couple of years ago. He also had an abscess in his mouth and having being diagnosed with kidney failure and a heart murmur at the same time he needed extra fluids during the op.

It cost me £270 in total for all his treatment including fluids, blood tests, anti-biotics painkillers, etc.
I am in East Mid's. But it just shows how prices vary so much in different parts of the country.

I hope you find a vet that you are happy with and good luck your boy!!

MandarinCheesecake · 21/09/2014 09:58

Also forgot to add that it was the state of his teeth that caused the kidney failure, I didn't realise that his bad breath was a sign that teeth were bad!!
The toxins from infection got into his blood stream and went to his kidneys. So bad teeth are not something to be ignored.

I too had to get a second opinion as the first vet tried to prescribe pain meds without doing any blood tests first. Even though I explained he was peeing and drinking all the time so suspected possible kidney problems. And I knew that some pain meds could seriously harm a cat with kidney failure and the one she tried to give me was on the danger list. Seriously You could see the pound signs flashing before her eyes.

I refused to pay for the meds and took him to the second vet who did diagnose kidney failure and would not give him any meds before his op.
It was only afterwards once he had had the fluid treatment that she gave him painkillers that were safe.

So yes I wasted money going to the first vet and If had have continued with the first one, my cat may have run into serious trouble health wise, but I am so glad I found the second vet as they were fantastic with my cat.

I paid about £300 for a good clean and one tooth extracted on my moggy.

Ring around - I won't go as far as to post publically where I work due to ethics, but we are close to you and would not charge that. You may however find that you will not get estimates over the phone as it is hard to judge necessary treatement without seeing the pet. Do check the clinic you choose has dental xray available though as this can make a big difference to decision making on the day and may actually save money and time on extractions according to results. Once you are happy that the clinic is set up to treat dental problems properly then a once over for an estimate should be possible.
