Kitty dilemma

After much debate we have decided to get a kitten. Always previously adopted older rescue cats but for various reasons we have agreed to get a kitten. DD is thrilled.

There is a choice of 2, both grey, one male grey all over the other a female with a few white markings. DD has only seen a photo of them and is desperate for the wee girl who is very cute. I have just been to see them and the girl seemed quieter, the owner said she was more scatty, she said the boy was the runt of the litter and much friendlier. He happily sat on my lap for cuddles whereas the female tolerated being held but was trying to climb off my lap.

They are not yet 6 weeks old, we would take home at 8 weeks, mid October time, so they are still very little. I have put a deposit down but I am really not sure which one to go for. The cute but shy one or the more sociable boy?

I'd have the boy, if he's less shy I'd guess he'd probably cope better with having children around.

I'd have the lap one for sure!

My cat was shy when we viewed him but is very different now.

Boys are cheaper to neuter but girls seem to be more home orientated.

Yes Madratlady I had thought the boy might cope better. The owner has a little girl and a dog so they will all be used to kids, but then again just because she is shy now, perhaps does not necessarily mean that she always will be. Oh dear, dilemma continues!

I've found with my own cats that the boys stay playful/friendly even as adult cats. Whereas the females have become a lot more aloof moody , they'll come for a bit of a pet when it suits them but otherwise keep themselves to themselves a lot more. My eldest boys at 16 will still happily chase laser pens etc. depends on what you want from a cat and I have no idea if my experience is typical of cats.

Thanks Petallic, Ideally we want a playful, friendly cat who likes cuddles. All my previous cats, mostly boys, have all been chilled out and really friendly but we have never had a kitten before and I have no idea how much of their temperament is down to nature, nurture, luck. I think I should go for the little boy, probably!

I would have them both.
Actually, I would take the whole litter

If it were down to just me I would have two, definitely, in actual fact there were 11 Crazynanna. Some had already been reserved but they were all utterly gorgeous. Fortunately we had already agreed that we were looking for a grey so that seriously limited the choice, just as well as there was no way I would have been able to decide.

Thanks for all the different views, it has been helpful to share my dilemma with other cat lovers. On balance I have decided we should go for the wee boy. He was gorgeous too and he was very happy snuggled on my lap. Now just have to get prepared for move in date. I have no idea about kittens, will get reading.
