slightly bewildered by the different catfoods at the supermarket.. I came on here for inspiration and you all talk about brands I've never seen/heard of! and then slagged off the 'go cat' kitten biscuits that I bought!! Grin Grin please can someone do me a list from best to worst Smile or point me in the right direction

Nope. We oust them swiftly if they're seen, but they just wait till we're out of sight... I guess they weren't trained to avoid before, and at 11 years old, they're not going to change (we got them as 10-yos when someone was emigrating).

My boys are on a mix of wet food, biscuits and raw meat.

I had high hopes for switching them from Felix to Animonda Carny but my boys are a bit fussy and don't seem very keen on it, so the shelter they were adopted from may be getting a donation! They're rather prone to licking the jelly off wet food and I'd hoped something with a high meat content like that would be preferred, but no...

Their favourite thing is chicken, cooked as a hand-fed treat but it's their favourite raw food as well. I give them chicken legs or thighs, with the skin taken off and a few chunks cut off with scissors and they handle the rest. All that's left of the legs is the little stubby end of the bone - they crunch the rest up fine, it's supposed to be very good for their teeth. They like gizzards, chicken heart and lamb heart as well, beef strips, ox kidney... little bit fussy with liver, which they need to have if they ever transition to a full raw food diet. There are supplements but I'm not sure I'm ready for all the calculations of the 85-10-5 proportions to make sure it's properly balanced, so the raw food is about a third to half their diet at the moment.

Once a week they have some tinned sardines and an egg yolk each, which they enjoy.

Yes, we've had to get more careful about not leaving food out on the table or counters since becoming cat owners, I found one of ours with her nose in some leftover chilli in the early days and was worried sick that the onions and garlic might have poisoned her (she was fine).

I very rarely catch them on the counters but they do sneak up there occasionally when they think we're not looking. One of them uses the counter as a launch pad to jump up on top of the cupboards above, she likes the vantage point.

I feed a mixture of Catz, Bozita, Animonda Carny and MACs wet food... for treats I give raw chicken legs (though not every cat will know how to deal with that - Tigercat however loves it)

Dry food over my dead body. I'd rather my cats won't have urinary tract problems when they get older, plus they both have a super shiny coat.

Also: shamelessly posting pics. Grin

the rescue centre where we got our cats said that Go-cat and the like were the cat equivalent of junk food. You do need to spend the money to get decent food for your cat.

We feed ours Felix supermeat, they were on Felix kitten food when we got them so we continued with that, but they now won't eat anything other than this (they're 9). They have Purina dried food, not the stuff you get in the supermarket, you get it in Pets at Home in massive bags.

Don't give them stuff like Sheba, they'll guzzle it up right enough but it's full of salt.

Talk to your vet to be some advise, but you will need to spend the money.

I think we need the name of your bank manager, charleybarley.

RiverTam · 04/09/2014 17:07

oh, and don't let them anywhere near 'human' food, a lot of it is highly toxic to cats (such as raisins). There's a list knocking around the internet somewhere.

Here's a general list of poisons and things which aren't too good for them, RiverTam - you can click on Food to narrow it.

Dogfish - ooh the sweetness of your lovely kitty! Beautiful.

Charley - fudgelicious little faces! Bacon cat adorable.

All Aldi own brand. Dry permanently left out with a bowl of water next to it, then share a tin of wet in the morning. Buy loves the wet, girl prefers the dry. When they're outside she's also the resident spider, slug, fly and wasp muncher, while he just thinks he's a sheep and starts eating grass then throwing it back up in the kitchen. Occasional bits of raw meat when we're cooking dinner and sometimes mix up the brands as they really aren't fussy about that.

My beautiful grey girl is 20 and her fav was always tesco pouches in jelly or felix as good as it looks 44 box in asda for 10-12 pound.
She also has James well beloved and applaws - both available in small bags to try in pets at home.

girliefriend · 07/09/2014 21:36

My 4yo boy cat is quite fussy, will only eat the morrisons own pouches in gravy, will turn turn his nose up in utter disgust if I try him with the jelly equivalent. I worry about the meat content though as its something ridiculous like 4% Shock

Both cats have access to a fairly limitless supply of dry food, tends to be what ever is on offer between iams, science diet and the pets at home ones. They also get left overs of fish and meat quite regularly.
