new cat!!

Very very excited.. There's a little cat coming to live in our house tomorrow!!. We were always dog people, and never ever thought we would have a cat, but this little boycat, who we've named Archie, Is moving in tomorrow. Am a bit scared we won't make him happy. Any hints and tips on how we can make him feel at home??

Well you can be dog people and cat people all at the same time!

How old is he and what sort of household is he coming to?

He's 10 weeks old and coming to a quiet house with just me, dh, and ds. Oh.. And a very high up, out of reach tank full of fish!. He will be alone for 6 hours a day, in the first instance, until he can go out, in the day only.

You're going to have to spend a lot of time with him during the rest of the day then. (He'll probably sleep while you're out but that will just store up kitten antics for the rest of the time - think lively 3 year old (but worse - kittens can jump) and you won't go far wrong.

Pesonally, I'd get the fish out of the house for a week or two - or in a room where he absolutely won't be able to get into. You may think that something is unreachable but until it's been kitten-tested you won't know for sure. (I've seen kittens reach places that I wouldn't have thought possible.) Basically, the house has to be kitten-proofed as you would baby-proof for a toddler. At least it won't be for as long though.

Oh yes don't let him in the same room as the tank until he's big enough to pull himself out if he manages to fall in.

Yes they can climb, and as they are so light, they will be able to climb curtains etc!
