Just a rant. The cat has a litter tray. She is old but keeps having accidents and pooing on the floor or door matt whilst in kitchen at night. She is a lovely cat but after finding poo in my dirty laundry basket i have had enough. Vet didnt seem interested when i told her about the accicdents.is it just an old age thing.

I change her litter every now and again
i got the wood litter from sainsbury's this time. She is very fussy so maybe doesn't like it. :/

What type of litter box is it? Some of them have quite high sides and can be difficult to get into for an older stiffer mog.

I would be inclined to clean the litter every day, so she has more room to do her business.

Good/luck with it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/08/2014 15:28

Do you chuck all the litter away and wash the tray out with hot soapy water once a week?.

RubbishMantra · 09/08/2014 16:22

Try her with a second litter tray. Cats often don't like to pee and crap in the same place.

Like fluffy said, litter box cleanliness is paramount. Remove waste as soon as it appears, then clean out litter box thoroughly once a week.

Also agree with litter tray and litter type but maybe if you are cleaning it out with soap and water try a less perfumed one? one of our idiot stable girls insists on using zoflora if she is animal sitting for us and they wont use it because the zoflora disinfectant is too strong smelling for them.

I think I'd be having her up to the vet again for an arthritis check because poo accidents can be one of the signs of a problem - particularly in an older cat, which you said she is. (I think that pooing being more difficult, they start to associate the tray with pain and difficulty and end up just going where they can. Something like that.) Seniorboy, who is an elderly boy, had some accidents until his vet established that he might have arthritis and he's broadly fine now with support from appropriate meds.

You might like to have a read of \link{http://www.icatcare.org:8080/advice/cat-health/arthritis-and-degenerative-joint-disease-cats\this} for background.

Hi all thanks for your replies i clean out the tray regularly with cif. Maybe its an overpowering scent for her but i get funny and paranoid about just using washing up liquid in litter tray. I might get a smaller one see if it works for a week and if not then another trip to the vet....about the arthritis....oh and i will not be leaving laundry in the kitchen at night again :(

I use Milton to clean mine and rinse well. Boiling water and fairy liquid must kill most nasties though.
More than one litter tray?
Lower sided one?
Clean out more often?

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/08/2014 22:41

I used an anti bac spray once thinking what a wonderful owner I was being and he wouldn't use it because it was too smelly.

Soap & waters fine, some disinfectants are toxic to cats anyway. I'd definitely try an extra tray.
