Just found some stray kittens and don't know what to do!

I just left work to go on my lunch and as I came to the bottom of the road, there were some young black kittens running out from in between the buildings. It's an industrial estate full of waste land so I'm assuming they haven't been dumped there or come from a nearby house.

I had to beep to make them move out of the road and it scared one causing it to run into the path of another oncoming car. I felt sick and so so upset (I'm still crying at my desk now).

I called the RSPCA as soon as I got back to work but they said they don't rescue stray cats and I can only call the police if the animals are causing drivers any danger... I am so shocked that nobody cares. I have rang a load of other organisations including Cat Protection but they won't come.

I feel like getting a box and going to take them home myself but the mother is with them and I don't know what will happen to her. There's no food out here, it's an abandoned industrial estate!

What should I do, any help please??

Hi AmenGirl,

I'm going to pm the details of someone in rescue in Merseyside way who may be able to help get the cat and kittens to safety.

I rescue cats myself but am a long way away in the North Herts region. If they can be brought to me I can take them.

Your not mad OP, you really aren't. I found a baby bird which had fallen from its nest whilst at work. The mum kept coming down to fuss and bring food but obviously there was nothing she could do to help him back up. I ended up convincing one of the engineers in the yard to take me up to the nest in a cherry picker with the wee bird scooped up in an umbrella so I could put him back. Definitely not mad, just caring. Smile Poor kitties, I hope they get some much needed good luck soon.

Place marking. OP I'm in the north west. If you get them tonight and take them home I can take them in tomorrow if you can get them here and try to rehome them.

I'm full to bursting with 4 rescue cats myself but I can't think of them there all alone Hmm

Did you tell them about the kitten looking relaxed and purring? That's not a feral kitten. If you can touch the kittens then they're not feral. Please go back and try to assess just how tame they are (using food). And then call the rescue back.

And what did CPL say? They usuall do neuter and return at least.

thecatneuterer · 08/08/2014 16:36

Just seen Hurricane's post. That's a wonderful offer. But you need a proper cat carrier at least and maybe help trapping the mother. I'm sure if you tell the charities that you don't expect them to take any cats in - just to help you catch them and neuter them, they may be more able to help.

Please don't give up.

Are they ok? What did you do

AmenGirl · 09/08/2014 11:04

I went back with some pouches and chicken bits but they were nowhere to be seen, I think they've actually found a way into the old derelict warehouse. There's a gap under the metal doors which I suppose they could get under?
And then when I went back a second time about 9pm (you can tell I couldnt get them out my head) the food had gone down a little bit but I called and called and nothing came out to me. Can only assume they live in there and go out for food in the day.

I am really annoyed that none of the charities would come when I first found them all! I know strays aren't their concern Hmm but how are they going to control colony sizes, inter breeding, poor health, disease, etc if they don't do something about it now. And obviously the mum or original cat came from somewhere! What if a family is missing her terribly from years ago, not knowing she's lost and having kittens? Sad

What if you call your local newspaper?

They might run the story and there will be publicity for cat and kittens.

RubbishMantra · 09/08/2014 16:28

Would you be able to leave them out some water when you next visit? Cats get dehydrated quickly, especially in this heat. I was worried at reading your post about them crowding around the milk bottle.

Hopefully one of the charities will help you out with trapping, and you will be able to take Hurr1cane up on her lovely offer of a home for them.
