hi,can anybody give some advice,my 1yr old kitty has a gunky eye, came in this afternoon with it,i have cleaned with plain water,he dosent seem in pain and is feeding normal

ive looked straight at him and the eye does look a little closed

i am going away early saturday morning for a few days and a friend is going to cat sit,but im worried its something serious but am going to have trouble getting to a vet before i go,

is there any home remedy i could try,hes going out as normal and apart from the gunk hes doing everything he normally would but i would hate to think hes in pain etc

would a pet shop sell anything

all advice appreciated

Vets I'm afraid, unless your friend is proficient in getting cats into carriers etc its a bit unfair to leave them with a poorly cat.

Cats don't show illness until its quite bad usually.

I'm with Fluffy, vet trip needed, might just need some eye drops to clear any infection. My cat is a twit and get hers caught on shirts all the time and comes home looking like Popeye.

ok thanks, how long will it take to see a differrece?

24-48 hours tops Smile

In the meantime bathe it with cooled boiled water and a pinch of salt

ilovechristmas1 · 08/08/2014 11:26

Yeah vets Hmm

It needs some antibiotic eye drops.

Do keep cleaning it with cooled boiled water in between drops though. This was the only thing that ended up saving one of my rescue kittens eyes (her brother died in an operation to remove his after they rescued the litter) she had infection after infection

ilovechristmas1 · 08/08/2014 18:10

yes vet said eye infection, drops should start working pretty quickly, hes now had his tea and having a nap,£41 later Shock

The fees are ridiculous aren't they? Most of it is because of the consultation. But as a human I can ring my doctor and say 'I've got an eye infection' and then go and pick up a prescription for drops.

But that's not good enough for cats, oh no. They have to have a thorough expensive check up first.

ilovechristmas1 · 08/08/2014 18:54

ha ha your so right it was £27 for the consultation the rest was the medicine

ive in my head said he's 18months old and never been ill so it works out at pence per week, that has taken the edge of the sting Smile

Hurr1cane · 08/08/2014 19:09

Plus I bet he's worth every penny

ilovechristmas1 · 08/08/2014 19:24

yeah he's all cosy and curled up at the moment, felt bad when the vet said the infection might be giving him some pain, all done and glad he''sgetting better

The difference being that your gp gets paid a salary....I don't think you do a Vetinary medicine degree for fun.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/08/2014 19:45

Bathe with cold tea.

patienceisvirtuous · 08/08/2014 19:50

Just rushed my kit to the vet with closed/gunky eye. All ok, our kitten has given her a small scratch, little bugger.

Glad he's okay OP. Better safe than sorry eh :)
