I feel so terrible. I groom our lovely persian cat about 4 times a week and her coat is generally v good condition - hardly any matting etc.
But she is going to cattery tomorrow so I was giving her last minute groom. I regularly trim round the back of her legs /bum with a pair of scissors and have never had any problems but she heard a noise and moved suddenly.
I didnt realise at first - but Ive cut her :-(
She made a noise but seems ok in herself. There is a very very small amount of blood but has definatley gone into flesh.
Should I take her to vets in the morning?
And tonight should I bathe it in salty cool boiled water?
I feel awful that Ive hurt her :-(

Ouchie :( easily done though. I would just bathe it. Maybe clip around the area so it stays clean. Get some pevidine scrub from the chemist and clean with that. Wouldn't bother with vets unless its open wound that needs stitching. Or of course if it gets infected (ask cattery to monitor)

. Invest in some nurses scissors. Curved so there is less likelihood of accidents.

Oh and thos bit is very important -you need medicinal Wine

BadRoly · 06/08/2014 21:26

When one of ours had an abscess, the vet told us to wash the area with normal antibacterial hand wash and rinse it well. She reckoned that was easier and as good as anything else for keeping the wound clean.

I'd just use salt water tbh if it was me.

Has the cut opened up? Or is it small?

blossommy · 06/08/2014 21:43

thanks for replying. I need Wine. Cant believe Ive been so clumsy :-(
Ive just bathed it in the salt water. (and given her tons of cats treats !!!)

She doesnt seem particularly bothered by it but definately winced when i bathed it.

Im more concerned because we are away for a few days - but we are close to a vets so can ask them advice in the morning.
Thank you for tip about nurses scissors. Will def get some. Have had long haired cats for years and never hurt any them before.
Its a relatively small cut but because of where it is I guess its more of a risk for infection.

The cattery will have access to a vets presumably though.

We used an electric beard trimmer on our chinchillas.

Don't beat yourself up too much - my mum once snipped my dog's ear in a similar incident. That bled terribly but with treats and hugs she was fine. We just kept clean with diluted TCP. I'm sure the cattery can keep an eye on it for you and consult vet if necessary but honestly I think she'll be fine. If she's let you bathe it, she clearly doesn't hold a grudge and still loves you heaps!

blossommy · 06/08/2014 21:53

Yes they will have access - and they are very nice people at cattery - just don't like the idea of leaving her when shes got a wound (caused by me !!!!)

I think she is appreciating the extra treats !!

Don't use providing iodine it is toxic to the endothelial cells that are needed to heal the wound.
I would take a really close look at the wound often these scissors snips can end up really very large and benefit from stitching or stapling.
I adv. against scissors for grooming unless you are very experienced as I see about 1 case a week of knots and skin being removed.

blossommy · 06/08/2014 23:16

Thanks for extra info lonecat.
I haven't put anything on it other than cool boiled salty water.
Will get the vet to check it in the morning just to double check doesn't need any stitches.
And despite years of grooming and no previous accidents - won't be using scissors again. Feel awful - poor little thing :-(

Thanks for advice last night.
Took her to vet this morning and they said it wasnt too deep so didnt need stitches. but gave us iodine for the cattery to put on it over next few days - and also a neck collar to try and stop her licking it off (although the vet thought it was unlikely that theyd be able to keep it on her because it was driving her mad.)
Vet very lovely and didnt report me to RSPCA !!!

I'm sure you won't be the last one she sees. At least you can relax now.
