Does my cat need to go to the vet's?

My local vet's have an appointment today.

My cat hardly drinks because he eats wet food. Lately I've noticed he has been drinking out of puddles and getting in the bath to drink out of the plug hole, and today I saw him gulping water out of the toilet. Also we were away this weekend and he had half a bowl of water when usually he doesn't touch it.

It could be that he's always done this and I've not noticed, and that he usually drinks outside not out of his bowl, but I am a little concerned as he is morbidly obese quite large.

Should I take him? It's a big ordeal for him as he's an anxious type and not sure if I am just being neurotic.

Yes I think you do need to take him. The more experienced will come on and let you know more but if I were you I would take him. It could be just because the weather has been hot but then it could be something more.
Hope he is ok.

It could be a sign of something going on, so I think a check would be wise, it could prevent anything further developing, or alternatively put your mind at rest. The other option would be to give the vet a ring for advice and they will let you know if they think they should see him. I hope all is well, good luck!

Thanks - my old cat died of kidney failure and did this sort of thing (but had lost weight). I think if anything it'll be diabetes so I will take him though. Poor lad!

Good luck - hopefully it is nothing but if it is you may have found out early.

Diabetes maybe.

The list of potential diseases is long, but the top three diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism can all be treated really well if caught early.

There would be other signs normally (but not always) of other things going on such as lethargy, off food and weight loss etc. Remember this is summer and it is hot, Your own fluid intake will be higher and so will your cats in order to regulate body temperature and keep hydrated. I would say keep an eye out a wee bitty longer before the vet but you know your cat best so up to you.

I took him. His fluid intake had maybe tripled this weekend along with him being obsessed with the loo and the shower etc. Vet said he seems really well and would expect weight loss etc if not (my cat has certainly NOT lost weight!). I have to provide a urine sample () and if that's ok he won't go back. Smile

Here is a picture of him in the loo.
