My cat smells of another woman's perfume

One of our burmese cats has recently become more and more distant from us. She used to purr constantly, and always be round your feet wanting to know what we were up to.

Having decided quite sometime ago that they weren't indoor cats (they made the decision, not us), she has started staying out at night, and now we rarely see her even during the day. I had started to suspect she was getting a bed and food elsewhere.

The other day, she came in, and my DH noticed that she smelt of perfume!

I feel utterly betrayed.

Neither of my 2 cats wear collars, so I am wondering if someone thinks she is an exceptionally good looking stray. I went out and bought collars for both of them today, but she hasn't even turned up today for me to put the collar on.

I suppose I am deluded to think that we own her, aren't I?

I think that the galling point is that to smell of perfume, she's likely been having a cuddle with the others - and not just begging for some tasty nosh. Oh the cruel cut.

JamForTea · 30/07/2014 08:04

Oh Gerund you're right, it's a Birman I see, not a Burmese! Hope you have some luck with the collar/disk Beryl, put your phone number on it too as well as 'hands off my bloody cat!' (Or similar) Wink.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 30/07/2014 08:13

They are shameless tarts. My Smackhead cat was getting tres tubby last winter (as he would come home and eat his dinner after being at his new house) I put the "he's in a special diet" on his collar. Turned out he had barged in to neighbours, terrified their little boy cats and eaten their food. 3times a day. Fat pig.
Give your gorgeous girl a squirt of your perfume behind her neck. Scent marking-Nes pas?

NewLeafExpat · 30/07/2014 10:01

this is hilarious!!

my childhood cat moved in with the (allergic) neighbours for about six months only eating at home and then popping back next door! cheeky bugger!

weirdly, they then moved out and we then ended up moving into their apartment so it was like he had just moved in before we did!!Hmm Smile

OP didn't realise it was you and your gorgeous Burmese that was the subject of this thread. She is utterly beautiful. I would be beyond devastated at the thought of someone else loving feeding my cat.
It's like someone moving in on your dcs!

Agree with her getting used to her collar, mine don't flinch at collar fussing now. I ensure they are soft and light and of course safety snap free ones. I get mine from gorgeous collars

I would be tempted to keep her in at night and ignore the whining, they would have to get used to it.
The alternative (my mum's beloved cat just disappeared one night and never came back Sad) is heartbreaking.

One of mine comes home smelling of rose scented talc - really strong artificial rose scent. Since we're out of the house most of the day, I@m glad she's found someone to hang out with and make a fuss of her (& I've had to put her on low calorie aged cat food anyway).

I agree that it can be a little hurtful, but my experience is that I thought my cats were "elsewhere". One had adopted a little old lady and was going for fuss and cuddles everyday. She just adores him, but has been told not to feed him as I suspect there were a few titbits being offered. He is a maine coon and is currently 23lbs in weight.

Another of my cats has "adopted" a couple opposite and again goes in for fuss and cuddles. The husband had a life-changing accident and is now housebound so if Barney goes over and sits with him whilst he is doing a puzzle or airfix he adores it. Apparently their grandchildren love him to.

I love my cats, would be devastated if they ever left me, but love the fact that other people love them as well.

NellyNellyNelly · 30/07/2014 11:57

too not to. Goes to sit on grammar naughty step.

RiverRocks · 30/07/2014 16:03

Another one with a womaniser! As a pp said, we work all day so are only home evenings and weekends. He has always done this technically in our first house it was the retired man next door whose own cat had just died that he used to spend the day with, so would that make him just a maniser? He has his breakfast with me in the morning, out all day then be waiting for me when I came home.

He's a free spirit, and I couldn't wouldn't stop him, but I would be devastated if he decided to move out!

BlackCat just goes door-to-door round the neighbourhood pleading malnourishment, I think! Grin

Oldraver · 30/07/2014 22:35

Yes I've just put a 'do not feed' collar on my cat and she didnt come home for four days. I am positive someone is feeding and keeping her in a certain neighbour has form

The collar has 'do not feed woven into it so its not like you wouldn't notice it

BerylStreep · 31/07/2014 10:20

My cat has just turned up again this morning. This time smelling of aftershave.

I must stop sniffing my cat. I am only torturing myself.

An equal opportunity cuddler?

As I said - little hussy.

Smile
Ruhrpott · 31/07/2014 10:28

My cat used to come home smelling of perfume. I noticed she was going sitting under the tumble drier vent outside when it was switched on!

villagecorner · 31/07/2014 16:27

My cats aren't allowed out for 3 to 5 weeks (just got them) but I've bought them collars from Amazon which say "I am microchipped" on them so the neighbours know they aren't strays. They were cheap and snap open easily. They're just bog standard moggies (black and white short haired and black semi - long haired) but I don't want anyone adopting them from me!

splendide · 31/07/2014 18:21

I have a cat friend who I meet at the sane corner every day on my walk to the station and have a massive cuddle with. He would smell of my perfume! He's the most ridiculously tarty cat I've ever seen, I've seen him lying on the pavement letting todlers fuss him.

LaVolcan · 01/08/2014 17:08

I love the idea of having a regular tryst with a cat friend.

BerylStreep · 01/08/2014 20:15

Well my cat must be on MN, because she has been around ALL day, and slightly back to herself, although still no purrs.

The tags arrived today, so will put them on.

Loving the idea of the morning stroke on the way to work! My other cat hurls herself at your feet, and if you don't stroke her, she won't give up, she just walks another couple of feet in front of you and hurls herself again!

It's an important part of my day! If he's not there I'm really sad for the rest of the walk.
