Tail injury?

So last night Carbecat came in crying and whining as if he was going to throw up a furball. After 10 mins of him doing this I knew it wasn't that - he was screaming at me and began walking very tentatively. I noticed his tail area was painful and that he'd emptied his anal glands when I was prodding at him to try and find what was hurting.

We went to the emergency vet and she checked him over and said the pain was coming from the base of his tail but couldn't offer any explanation as to how.
She did check that another cat hadn't bitten him there - apparently it's a popular attack area -
So he's feeling rather sorry for himself today - still has the effects of the painkillers going on, he has a shaved arsehole and part of his tail and he's grounded too so not a happy chappy.

Have any of your cats had this happen and do you know how they did it?
I have visions that the bloody idiot got it trapped in the gaps of the fence but I'm not sure his big raccoon tail would fit in the gap.

I can think of half a dozen ways a tail could be trapped and wrenched free - and that's before you even consider a possible RTA. I'd be a little concerned about the possibility of a fracture or dislocation though - did she mention that at all?

Is he peeing/pooing OK as far as you know?

She said it didn't feel fractured/broken.
She checked him for signs of a RTA - scuffed pads on his paws and any other injury/pain - there'was nothing to suggest it.

Peeing yes but no poop yet today but he hasn't really eaten too much and he was given a morphine based painkiller and an anti -inflammatory so could be a bit constipated?? Plus he hates pooing inside so will wait until he's absolutely sure that he's not allowed to go outside before giving in.

He's still feeling the effects of the pain killers so thankfully doesn't seem to be in pain anymore.

We've never had any tail problems before. Usually at this time of year Carbecat runs the gauntlet from the sea gulls that want to swoop at him. He likes to persistently watch and wait for their babies to make a mistake and fall to the floor - he's almost had a few but luckily for the baby gulls - Mummy always gets there first to scare him off :)
