Cat litter and trays

I have two cats who are indoor cats so I rely on litter trays a lot. At first I got them a hooded tray which was far less messy but I found it a beggar to clean and was unable to use the litter tray liners in it as it was too big and I find them invaluable for keeping the tray clean. I now have a normal litter tray and just pick up the liner, chuck it away and the bottom of the tray stays clean, no hassle. However, it does get more messy with the cats kicking the litter about.

As for the litter, my favourite is the crystals but the bags are so small they only last a few days so I find I am forever going through them. I've had Catsan which lasts a bit longer but they still seem to go through it at a rate of knots.

I've just ordered and had delivered the Asda smartprice litter which is a huge bag and should last a while but the big bag is taking up room and its heavy to lift.

I'd like to stick with the crystals but they don't seem economical, or am I not using them correctly, should I put in a full bag at a time, will it last longer that way, I tend to just cover the bottom as I find if I put more litter in the cats use it quickly anyway and once they have urinated it in a couple of times they won't it and use the floor instead.

How can I get round this, should I go back to the hooded tray or use different litter?

Do you only have the one tray? If that's the case, get another one, so if it's been used and not scooped, there is another tray to use.

I find it better to fill the tray deeply, so the used litter can clump properly, if there's not enough litter to absorb the pee, it puddles at the bottom of the tray. From reading your post, it sounds like you're emptying the entire tray when it's been used instead of scooping out the clumps. If that's the case, I'm not surprised you're getting through so much.

You might find it cheaper to buy your litter online, I use this one from Zooplus, it's fab.

With the crystal litter I think you just pick out the solids and leave the rest until it gets saturated, it should last ages. I use Cat's Best Oko (or somthing like that) which is clumping and flushable. I fully empty the trays once in a blue moon quite infrequently. I do have multiple trays though.

I have six cats, the best litter I've found by far is professional classic cat litter from zooplus, a bag lasts ages, if you google it on youtube a chap has done a video on its usage and costs, which was what encouraged me to buy it. I wouldn't use anything else now. :)

Just bought 2nd bag of "best cat litter in the world" as it's called (zooplus)
It is not cheap but it is excellent. Both trays (2 cats) are cleaned twice a day but the bag lasts for ages. I think it's worth the money. We tried cheaper litter but went through it at a rate of knots so really BCLITW is actually vg value for money.
Using covered trays.

That's the one my cats use valrhona, it's biodegradable to clumps can go down the loo. I's made of corn I think.

Thanks for your replies. I just have one litter tray as I don't really want to have two. I've always had one tray even with more cats in the past.

I like the crystals but they get saturated pretty quickly even though I scoop out the poo regularly. I find the crystals less messy and dusty and easier to store and carry though. I now have a huge bag of Asda clumping litter which is awful, it gets saturated through after just one wee and I am having to change the whole lot daily if not more. The zoo litter looks good but is too expensive and I would have to pay delivery too as I don't drive.

I do like Catsan but that doesn't seem to last either. I have started putting more litter in the tray now too.

Our bag of litter has just finished so it lasted 6 weeks with 2 trays being used by 2 cats. If you have one tray it would last 12 weeks. I reckon that works out at what? 3 euro a week?

Try Oko Plus Cat's Best. With three young cats two years ago we tried all kinds (World's Best IS good but v exp and tracks everything everywhere) and found the Oko was the best combination of absorbancy, cost, absolutely no smell and long life.

Try a small bag from Pets at Home then buy in bulk online if you like it (Zooplus are cheap)
