My cat has been run over :(

My beautiful fluffy tortie has been run over, my poor old girl.

She's at the vets and has a definite broken tail which will most likely need amputating. She also needs a pelvic X-ray which they need to knock her out for, they have to do this in the morning as she is in shock right now.

What does a broken pelvis mean for a cat? Can she recover?

Shit, I saw it happen, she so stupid, she won't move out of the way for cars.

Please can you advise / reassure, oh I don't know...just tell me she'll be alright please.

Oh no ! That's terrible . Out neighbours cat was run over twice a few years ago. Had tons of surgery . He's fine now and still going strong , even though it was touch and go he recovered fully so fingers crossed for your little cat .

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 26/06/2014 19:46

Oh you poor thing, poor puss.

My cat lost her tail (before we got her) and she's fine, but is a bit lacking in balance. Not sure about the pelvis q, sorry Sad

emeraldislegirl · 26/06/2014 20:05

My cat broke her pelvis last year. She was missing for a week before she dragged herself home. In her case we just had to keep her restricted in a pen for 2 weeks and she had pain killers.

A year later she does move awkwardly sometimes (but that could be the leg she broke on a different occasion ) but that doesn't prevent her from massacring the local rabbit population.

Offler · 26/06/2014 20:08

Thanks everyone, it's going to be a tough night, but hopefully the X-ray won't show anything too bad x

I just can't stop seeing her under the wheel of the car Sad

That's an awful thing for you to witness, there's been a couple of cats on here with broken pelvis's.

springbabydays · 26/06/2014 20:41

Oh no poor kitty and poor you! At least she's in the best place now. Sorry you had to witness her accident. You'll be seeing that image in your head for a while but it will fade in time.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Bakersbum · 26/06/2014 20:44

How.awful and to have seen it happen. Sending get well wishes to your kitty.

AtYourCervix · 26/06/2014 20:50

Poor cat.

Our orange boy broke his pelvis years ago. They were worried about nerve damage and if he'd be able to wee and poo. It healed perfectly though He also smashed a leg so badly it was amputated.
Hope she's ok.

DP has just got home from the night vets, he left her purring and content (good painkillers!!). He'll collect her in the morning to take her back to the regular vets for her anaesthetic and X-ray and I guess we'll then find out when she needs the op for her tail to come off. She's so skinny that her fluffy tail balanced her out, she will look odd!! But I'll just be glad to have her home!!

Poor cat & poor you. Hopefully the tail can be operated on & I have heard people mention cage rest for a broken pelvis so maybe that will be all that's needed for her. Keep us posted Thanks

Offler · 27/06/2014 10:28

I've seen her this morning and she soaked up lots of fuss (high on morphine!!) but she did look so sorry for herself Sad

The vet said that they will give her a GA later today and remove her tail and X-ray her to see what the pelvic damage is. Will know more after 2pm.

She's come through the op, and is now tail-less, she does have a fracture to her pelvis, but hopefully cage rest will help it heal itself without surgery. She may have spinal damage and may have issues with toileting, but it's a case of wait and see. She can come home tomorrow!!

Offler year ago we had a ginger girl cat who got run over by a lorry. She broke her pelvis and paralysed her tail so had to have it amputated. She wad absolutely fine and went on to live to the grand old age of 23 - she was quite a local celebrity back in the day bless her.

Offler · 27/06/2014 21:32

Thanks Betty fingers crossed for my girl.

We've just gone a bought a crate and a small litter tray, so getting all prepped for her home coming tomorrow. I'm going to work from home as much as I can so I'm able to keep an eye on her, and when I can't hopefully DP can take some hours off so she's not alone for too long for the first few weeks. We have a spare room she can go in for quiet and when she feels perkier, we'll bring her into the main areas for more company.

We've only had her since Xmas (adopted from a neighbour that moved).

Oh no, fingers crossed for Offlercat.

Sending you both lots of love and a speedy recovery.

Whatsforpudding · 28/06/2014 00:10

My cat had a fractured pelvis too, which healed itself with 6 weeks cage rest.

Hope your cat is feeling more comfortable and all is well with her spine.
Get well soon, Offlercat.

springbabydays · 28/06/2014 21:46

How is she tonight OP did you get her home?

Offler · 28/06/2014 22:23

She's home, she's tried to get in the litter tray for a wee, but awkward for her as she's in pain so howls when she moves Sad. She's eaten a little, the vet have us some liquid food so she's been lapping that off a spoon.

When she's not trying to move, she's purring and reasonably content.

The vet is still concerned about her pelvis so is going to speak to a specialist on Monday to get his opinion on whether cage rest is the way to go, or operate and pin it.

But at least she knows when to wee, and can move, even if it is painful, so looking positive in the long run hopefully :)

Thanks x

Poor little puss must be heartbreaking for you. Glad she's moving and seems to have her functions intact. Bet she's pleased to be home with her family!

Pipbin · 28/06/2014 22:58

Oh poor baby. I hope she is better soon. It's so heartbreaking to see them in pain.

Wishyouwould · 28/06/2014 23:12

Aww OP hope she perks up soon (hugs) So pleased things are looking positive for her.

Offler · 28/06/2014 23:49

I'm slow cooking a chicken tomorrow, so she'll get all the tempting leftovers as a treat Wink

DP will sleep in with her tonight (on inflatable mattress...cage is too small for them both Wink) to make sure she is ok, and we'll see how she goes!

He's a real softy for cats, they've both got him well trained Grin

Thanks for all your support xx

Hi all, Offlercat is doing ok, sleeping lots (as cats do!). Taking her painkillers well and enjoyed the chicken leftovers I finely diced for her. She'll probably get too used to being fed off a spoon and will come to expect it as her right Wink.

The vet called this morning after speaking with the specialist, and she said he would be reluctant to operate unless absolutely necessary on a cat her age (13) and to continue with cage rest.

She's been going to the toilet in a fairly controlled manner, although still not making it into the litter tray due to pain, but signs are good.

We have to update the vet later in the week and take her back next week to have the stitches taken out of her stumpy tail and the vet will give her a check up as well!

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/06/2014 16:42

Best buy bigger spoons now, it'll make the job quicker. Solid gold, obviously.

I'm glad she's doing so well. Is she ever going out the house again though?.

timtam23 · 30/06/2014 20:57

Poor girl, but glad to hear she is home and coping (and being pampered!)
